UWL Never Trails in Earning WIAC Win at UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked 10th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, earned a 62-51 win at UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Quandt Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the WIAC.

UWL never trailed Saturday as it won its ninth straight game over UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles' Austin Westra scored the first five points on a three-pointer and dunk. UW-Stevens Point trailed, 9-6, with 13:40 left on a AJ Makinen three-pointer, but the Pointers would get no closer the rest of the game. UWL used a 8-4 run to lead 17-10 on Ethan Anderson's layup with 9:28 remaining. 

Brennan Timm's free throw for UW-Stevens Point cut the deficit to 19-14, but UWL went on a 9-0 run to lead 28-14 on an Anderson three-point field goal. The Pointers made it 30-21 with 2:41 left when the Eagles scored nine of the final 11 points of the half to take a 39-23 advantage. 

UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 41-26, but UWL took its largest of the game at 46-26 on a Torin Hannah three-pointer with 14:00 left. The Pointers could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

UWL shot 43.6% from the field, including 47.1% (eight-of-17) from three-point range, and 46.2% (six-of-13) at the free throw line. Anderson led UWL with 18 points, going seven-of-12 from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. Anderson added six rebounds and three assists. Tanner Resch finished with 10 points and Hannah nine. JJ Paider finished with a team-high seven rebounds. 

UW-Stevens Point shot 37.5% from the field Saturday, including 31.8% (seven-of-22) from three-point range, and 61.5% (eight-of-13) at the line. Ryan Genrich led the Pointers with 15 points and seven rebounds while Makinen finished with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 11 at UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
