UWL Defeats Augsburg; Murphy Earns 100th Win

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team defeated Augsburg University 2-1 Wednesday night at Veteran Memorial Field Sports Complex. The win improves the Eagles, ranked 13th on the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll for NCAA Division III, to 3-0 overall while the Auggies fall to 3-1 overall.

Coach Murphy wins 100th game.




With the win, head coach Jason Murphy earned his 100th career win at UWL. In his eighth season at the helm, Murphy is now 100-36-20 overall. 

The Eagles would get on the scoreboard first as Claire Cater took a corner kick and found Ainsley Allen who was able to head the ball in. The goal was Allen's first of the season while Cater's assist was her first as an Eagle. The score would remain tied the rest of the first half as both teams would have scoring opportunities. UWL finished the opening period with an 11-10 advantage in shots. 

Cater would then put the Eagles up 2-0 in the 71st minute with an unassisted goal. Less than three minutes later, Augsburg cut into their deficit with an unassisted goal from Molly Conners in the 74th minute. Both teams would keep the pressure on with scoring opportunities; however, UWL's defense would stay strong and keep the Auggies off the scoreboard.

The Eagles finished the game with a 21-14 advantage in shots including five from both Allen and Cater. Ellie Arndt also recorded four shots for the Eagles. Augsburg was led by Jennifer Bobaric with three shots. UWL had ten corner kicks including six in the first half while Augsburg did record one. 

Sophia Anger earned the win in goal for the Eagles playing all 90 minutes and recording eight saves. Iz Shuster suffered the loss in goal for Augsburg as she finished with eight saves as well. 

UWL will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bloomington, Ill. to play Dominican University. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
