Volleyball Falls to Nationally Ranked UW-Eau Claire

Box Score La Crosse, WIs. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-1 (16-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-25) to nationally ranked UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles fall to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action while the Blugolds, ranked 11th in this weeks American Volleyball Coaches Assocition Top-25 poll, are now 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the WIAC. 

The Eagles took an early 6-4 lead in the first set before the Blugolds went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. UWEC would not trail again in the first set as they took the first set 25-16. The Eagles were held to just a .108 (9-5-37) hitting percentage in the first set while the Blugolds hit .294 (15-5-34).

With the second set tied 3-3, UWEC went on a 6-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Eagles would slowly chip away at their deficit and eventually took their first lead of the set (15-14) on a kill by Brianne Korducki. UWL extended their lead to 17-14 before the Blugolds scored six of the next eight points to regain the lead at 20-19. After a Korducki kill tied the set at 20, UWEC scored five of the final eight points to take the second set 25-23. 

The Eagles fell behind 5-2 early in the third set before tying it at 9-9. Three straight errors by UWL gave UWEC a 14-11 lead. The Eagles then tied at 14 before the Blugolds once again took a three point lead (18-15) . Three straight kills by the Eagles would tie it at 18 and third set would see three more ties including 22-22. Back-to-back kills by Korducki would give the Eagles a 24-22 lead. After a kill by the Blugolds made it 24-23, an out of rotation service error by UWEC would give the Eagles the 25-23 win in the third set. 

UWEC jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth set and would never trail. Two service aces by Summer Schwenn would help the Eagles gut their deficit to four (12-8) but that would be as close as they would get in the fourth set. UWL was held to a .033 hitting percentage in the final set while UWEC finished hitting .478.

For the match, UWL finished hitting .171 (51-26-146) and was led by Gabrialla Johnson who finished with 14 kills. Also in double digit kills for the Eagles was Korducki and Madison Weisensel with 11 each. Korducki also finished with a team high 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sydney Fedderly and Schwenn added 11 digs each for the Eagles. Megan Adams finished with a team high 22 digs. 

UWEC hit .274 for the match and was led by Arianna Barrett with 14 kills. Jordan Witzel added 10 kills while Charlie Nelson finished with 39 assists. Nelson was also tops for the Blugolds with 16 digs. 

UWL will return to action on Saturday when they face non-conference foe Buena Vista University. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
