Orange, Calif. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked 13th on the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll, earned a 1-0 victory at Chapman University (Calif.) Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season while the Panthers drop to 0-2.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, UWL had two shots in the opening half with Chapman (Calif.) recording five.
The game remained scoreless until
Chelsea Gale scored at 86:55 after an UWL corner kick. The Eagles held the Panthers to one shot in the final six minutes of the game.
UWL finished with 14 shots in the game, five on goal.
Maggie Hernandez, who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory at California Lutheran University Thursday, finished with four shots on Saturday.
Ainsley Allan and
Ellie Arndt each had three shots. Arndt had a team-high two shots on goal while Hernandez and Allan each finished with one.
Chapman (Calif.) also totaled 14 shots on Saturday with eight on goal. Lily Jose and Jenna Urrabazo led the Panthers with three shots with two on goal. Ashley Wielenga, Chaslyn Nestor and Nikki Namdar each had two shots.
UWL had 13 corner kicks, including nine in the second half, while Chapman (Calif.) finished with two.
Sophia Anger recorded her second shutout of the season for the Eagles, finishing with eight saves. Maia Mills finished with four saves for the Panthers.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 7 hosting Augsburg University (Minn.) at 6 p.m. in the Eagles' home opener at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
