UWL Drops Suspended Game; Falls in Doubleheader to UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped three games at 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at Zimmermann Field.  The Eagles lost the completion of the suspended game from Saturday, falling 15-14 in 13 innings. UW-Stevens Point then earned a sweep of the original scheduled doubleheader, winning 2-0 and 13-3 (eight innings). 

UWL drops to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stevens Point improves to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference.

Sunday's first game was continued after being suspended due to darkness after nine innings on Saturday. UW-Stevens Point earned the win on Payton Nelson's two-out home run in the bottom of the 13th. 

UWL scored five runs in the top of the first in the nightcap on Saturday. Jack Olver's sacrifice fly scored Connor Roesler with the first run of game. Mac Born hit a three-run home run to make it 4-0 and Jack Kelly followed with a solo home run. 

UW-Stevens Point came back with four runs in the bottom of the first on one hit. Matt Bauman scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 while Lucas Luedtke's three-run home run cut the lead to 5-4. The Pointers took an 8-4 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second, including three on Eagles' wild pitches. 

Born's second three-run home run of the game tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the third. UW-Stevens Point took a 9-8 lead in the third with an unearned run. Born scored on a passed ball in the top of the fifth to force a 9-9 tie, but the Pointers tallied four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-9 lead. Nelson had a two-run single in the inning. 

UWL cut it to 13-10 in the seventh as Olver doubled and scored on Born's RBI single. The Eagles took a 14-13 lead in the ninth. Olver singled with one out and went to third on Born's double. Kelly's RBI single scored Olver to make it 13-11. After a strikeout. Jonathan Wizner hit a two-out three-run home run to give UWL a 14-13 lead. UW-Stevens Point tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Aaron Simmons' solo home run. 

The Eagles had 18 hits with Born going 5-for-7 with seven RBI, four runs and two home runs. Olver went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI while Kelly finished 4-for-7 with two runs and two RBI. Caleb Matl (1-3) suffered the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four.

UW-Stevens Point finished with 13 hits in the game with Nelson going 4-for-8 with four RBI and three runs. Simmons scored four times. Sidney Ferry (3-0) earned the win for the Pointers, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and one walk while striking out five.

The Pointers tallied single runs in the second and seventh innings in their 2-0 win over the Eagles in Sunday's original scheduled opener. Luedtke scored on Logan Matson's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second with the first run of the game. Baumann stole home in the bottom of the seventh to make it 2-0. 

Tommy Nelsen and Ben LaRonge had the only two hits for UWL in Sunday's first game. Brady Schmitt (1-2) took the complete-game loss, pitching 8.0 innings. He allowed eight hits, two runs and three walks while striking out three. 

UW-Stevens Point finished with eight hits as Bradley Comer and Anthony Tomczak each went 2-for-4. Casey Pickering (3-0) earned the complete-game shutout for the Pointers, going 9.0 innings, allowing two hits and four walks with four strikeouts. 

In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Bradley Comer's RBI groundout. UWL tied the game in the top of the second. Kelly reached on an error to open the inning and scored after a UW-Stevens Point throwing error after Wizner grounded out. 

UW-Stevens Point tallied six runs in the fourth. Matson and Baumann both walked with the bases-loaded to give the Pointers a 3-1 advantage. Simmons' RBI single scored another run while Jakob Boos came in on a throwing error to make it 5-1. Comer's RBI single and Quin Henwood's sacrifice fly increased the lead to 7-1. 

The Eagles cut the deficit to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but the Pointers responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Tommy Nelsen's double scored Logan Pye to cut it to 7-2 for UWL while Zach Carney came in after Born reached on a UW-Stevens Point error. Comer's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth extended UW-Stevens Point's lead to 9-3. The Pointers added three runs in the seventh and earned the victory in the eighth inning on Nelson's sacrifice fly. 

UWL finished with five hits in the nightcap as Carney went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jakck Mizgalski (0-1) took the loss, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk while striking out four. 

UW-Stevens Point totaled 12 hits with Simmons going 3-for-4 with three runs. Baumann and Matson also scored three times while Comer went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Tyler Beyer (1-0) earned the victory, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

UWL returns to action Friday, April 15 hosting UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.
