La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team opened its 2022 home schedule with a 20-4 victory over Clarke University (Iowa) Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season while the Pride drop to 0-1.
The 20 goals ties a single-game school record. UWL finished with a 20 in a victory (20-10) over Wartburg College (Iowa) on March 13, 2021.
UWL scored the first four goals of the game, including a pair from
Nicole Jernander to start the game. Her second goal was assisted by
Anna Reifschneider.
Lauren Schwartz made it 3-0 with 8:23 left in the first quarter while
Megan Feeney scored at 7:49. Clarke (Iowa) cut the lead to 4-1 after the first quarter.
Lauren Schwartz had four goals in Tuesday's win.
The Eagles outscored the Pride, 4-1, in the second quarter to take a 8-2 halftime lead.
Kiersten Pelletier scored with 9:55 left on
Britta Nelson's assist to make it 5-1 while Feeney scored off a Pelletier assist with 9:31 remaining in the second quarter for a 6-1 lead. Reifschnieder's goal with 8:29 left with an assist from Feeney gave UWL a 7-1 lead. After Clarke (Iowa) scored to cut it to 7-2, Pelletier scored with 5:53 remaining for a 8-2 halftime advantage.
UWL scored the first four goals of the second half for a 12-2 lead.
Hannah Gronowski and Schwartz each scored with Feeney recording the next two. Gronowski had an assist on Feeney's first goal. Clarke (Iowa) cut it to 12-3, but Schwartz' free position goal with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter gave UWL a 13-3 lead. Alyssa Humphrey scored with 4:35 left for Clarke (Iowa) to make it 13-4, but
Madison Buttweiler's unassisted goal with 2:28 remaining gave UWL a 14-4 lead.
Kaley Hendrick scored with 14:14 remaining for UWL with an assist from Buttweiler to start the scoring in the fourth quarter. Jernander scored three goals in the fourth quarter while Grace Willmitt and Schwartz also scored for the Eagles. Hendrick had an assist in the quarter as the Eagles scored all of five of game's goals in the quarter.
Megan Feeney had four goals and one assist.
UWL finished with 44 shots in the game, including 25 in the second half. Jernander led the Eagles with five goals while Feeney and Schwartz each tallied four. Pelletier had two goals as seven different players recorded an assist.
Abi Furlano earned the win in goal, recording six saves while playing the first half.
Emily Hageman (21:48) had two saves and
Nora Riley (8:12) recorded one.
Clarke (Iowa) totaled 18 shots while being held to two in the fourth quarter. Humphrey had two goals for the Pride. Mars Beimert suffered the loss, recording 12 saves.
UWL returns to action Friday, March 11 hosting Cornell College (Iowa) at 4 p.m.
