Late Goal Gives Illinois Wesleyan Win over UWL

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell 12-11 to Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles drop to 2-2 on the season while the Titans improve to 2-7. 

In the first-ever meeting between the teams, UWL scored the first two goals Saturday from Hannah Gronowski and Nicole Jernander. Lauren Schwartz recorded an assist on Jernander's goal. Illinois Wesleyan scored the next four goals for a 4-2 lead before Schwartz scored with :01 left in the opening quarter to cut it to 4-3.

Megan Feeney had four goals and two assists.


The Eagles' Megan Feeney scored with 13:27 remaining in the second quarter to force a 4-4 tie and scored the go-ahead goal with 2:44 left to make it 5-4. The Titans tied it at 5-5 on Carlyn Bratt's goal with 2:23 remaining, but Britta Nelson's goal with :41 left gave UWL a 6-5 advantage. Illinois Wesleyan tied the game at 6-6 at halftime on Hannah Trousdale's goal with :03 left.  
Mia Fiandaca's goal with 10:52 remaining in the third quarter gave Illinois Wesleyan a 7-6 lead. UWL responded with three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. Feeney had two goals, including the tying goal, while Gronowski's goal gave UWL a 8-7 lead. The Titans cut it to 9-8, but Abigail Steigauf's goal with 6:54 left provided UWL with a 10-8 lead. Sarah Gleason's goal for the Titans with 4:19 cut it to 10-9, but Gronowski scored with :02 remaining in the period to give the Eagles an 11-9 lead after three quarters. 

Illinois Wesleyan scored the game's only three goals in the fourth quarter. Fiandaca cut it to 11-10 with 12:52 remaining and Landry Elliott tied it with 12:05 left. Cassandra Jones scored the eventual game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining. 

The game was played with winds at 18 miles per hour and started with a wind chill of 13 degrees.

UWL finished with 21 shots in the game with Feeney leading the Eagles with six. Feeney scored four goals with two assists while Gronowski had three goals on five shots. Schwartz totaled one goal and team-high three assists while Jernander had one goal and two assists. Abigale Furlano recorded 16 saves and team-leading seven ground balls for the Eagles. Schwartz and Rachel Kunz each finished with five ground balls.

Illinois Wesleyan totaled 39 shots. Fiandaca had nine shots while Jones, Gleason and Elliott each had eight. Gleason scored four goals while Jones had three and Fiandaca two. Lizzie Rymarcsuk earned the win for the Titans, playing the fourth quarter and recording one save. Rebecca Rymarcsuk played the first three quarters, registering six saves.

UWL returns to action Sunday, March 27 hosting North Central College (Ill.) at noon.
