Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked opponents Thursday. The Eagles, 1-3 on the season, fell 9-0 to ninth-ranked Rowan University (N.J.) before a 7-4 loss to 10th-ranked Webster University (Mo.).
Rowan (N.J.) scored twice in the first and second innings for a 4-0 lead. The Profs (7-3) added a run in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead. Rowan (N.J.) tallied two more runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings.
UWL was held to three hits with
Jack Kelly going 2-for-3 and
Andrew Rajkovich 1-for-3.
Jacob Bryant took the loss for the Eagles, going 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out four.
Webster (Mo.) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added two runs in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Gorloks scored twice in the fifth to make it 5-0. UWL got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with
Anthony Vivian scoring on
Jacob Shamban's RBI single.
A sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth for Webster (Mo.) made it 6-1, but
Jack Olver's sacrifice fly scored
Mac Born for UWL in the bottom of the inning to make it a four-run game. After the Gorloks got a run in the top of the eighth, the Eagles cut the deficit to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Born and
Colton Schraepfer scored as Olver reached on a Webster (Mo.) error. UWL left the bases-loaded in the inning.
UWL totaled 11 hits with Vivian, Olver and
Jacob DeBruin each finishing with two. Olver totaled three RBI while Born scored twice.
Alex Redman suffered the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (five earned) and four walks while striking out three.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 19 with a pair of games in Winter Haven, Florida. The Eagles face Southern Maine University at 8:30 a.m. (Central) while playing Augustana College (Ill.) in a junior varsity game at 1:30 p.m. (Central).
