UWL Falls to Cortland; Eden Throws Shutout over Fredonia

Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games Thursday, falling 5-3 to SUNY Cortland before earning a 4-0 victory over SUNY Fredonia. The Eagles are now 9-4 on the season. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead over Cortland (N.Y.) in the top of the first on Jordyn McCormack's home run. The Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the inning on McKenna Barry's RBI groundout. Halle Wright's double in the bottom of the second game Cortland (N.Y.) a 2-1 lead. 

The Eagles regained the lead at 3-2 on Kendra Leis' two-run home run in the top of the fourth, but the Red Dragons tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lizzy Byers' double tied the game and Wright delivered the go-ahead two-run home run. 

UWL had six hits in the game with McCormack and Leis each finishing with two. McCormack scored twice while Leis had two RBI. Remington Stark took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing three hits, three run and three walks while striking out five. Elise Weinzierl started for the Eagles, going 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and four walks with one strikeout.

In the win over Fredonia (N.Y.), UWL scored twice in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from Hailey Jibben and Kate O'Brien. The Eagles added to their lead in the second inning on McCormack's run-scoring single. Kyra Lard's RBI double in the fourth finished the scoring. 

Ally Eden earned the complete-game victory for UWL, going 7.0 innings, allowing one hit while striking out four. She retired the first 20 batters of the game before Fredonia (N.Y.) got a single with two outs in the top of the seventh.

UWL finished with 10 hits as Lard, McCormack and Emily Lyman each had two. 

UWL returns to action Friday, March 18 with a pair of games in Leesburg, Florida, playing William Paterson University (N.J.) at 9 a.m. (Central) and Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 11:15 a.m. (Central).
