Marietta, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 74-68 victory over Guilford College (N.C.) in the Marietta College (Ohio) Shrine Tournament Championship Saturday night. The Eagles, ranked 15th on D3hoops.com, improve to 3-0 on the season while the Quakers drop to 2-1.
UWL led 19-18 with 8:30 left in the first half when it went on a 12-3 run to take a 31-21 advantage with 5:04 remaining on Will Fuhrman's three-pointer. Guilford (N.C.) cut the lead to 31-23, but a 9-2 run by UWL gave the Eagles a 40-25 lead with :49 left after
Luke Schwartzhoff's layup. UWL led, 40-27, at halftime.
Austin Westra's jumper with 17:37 remaining in the game gave UWL a 45-30 lead. The Eagles later led, 49-36, when the Quakers went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 49-43 with 14:21 remaining on a Tyler Dearman jumper.Â
Torin Hannah averaged 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in the tournament.
The Eagles regained a 13-point lead with 12:58 left at 58-45 on
Torin Hannah's three-point basket. Guilford (N.C.) responded to cut the lead to 61-59 with 6:57 remaining on Gabe Proctor's three-point field goal after a 14-3 run. Luke Proctor's three-pointer with 4:36 left cut it to 65-64, but Hannah connected on another three-pointer to make it a four-point game. Rob Littlejohn's jumper with 2:24 left cut the deficit to 68-66, but the Quakers could get no closer the rest of the game.
Ethan Anderson made a pair of free throws for a 70-66 lead and later hit a jumper with :31 remaining to make it 72-66. Guilford (N.C.) missed a pair of three-point shots and Anderson connected with a pair of free throws with :18 left. Guilford went one-of-eight from the field in the last 1:48.
UWL shot 50.0% from the field Saturday, including 42.9% (12-of-28) from three-point range, and 88.9% (eight-of-nine) at the free throw line. Anderson led the Eagles with 21 points while also finishing with six rebounds and three assists. Hannah had 15 points and team-high nine rebounds.Â
Anderson and Hannah were named to the all-tournament team with Anderson earning Most Valuable Player honors.Â
Guilford (N.C.) shot 37.0% from the field, including 38.1% (eight-of-21) from three-point range, and 76.9% (20-of-26) at the line. Dearman led the Quakers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Proctor and Luke Proctor each finished with 10 points.
UWL returns to action Friday, November 18 facing Cornell College (Iowa) at 6 p.m. in the Wartburg College (Iowa) Tournament.Â
