La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) non-conference win over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 12-16 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 9-16.
It is UWL's fourth straight win over Saint Mary's (Minn.).
The Eagles never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a 6-2 lead. The Cardinals tied it at 10-10, but the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut the lead to 21-13, but could get no closer the rest of the set.
Summer Schwenn's ace made it 23-13 followed by a Cardinals' hitting error and UWL's
Madison Weisensel secured the set with a kill.
The Cardinals took an 11-8 lead in the second set, but a 4-0 run gave the Eagles a 12-11 advantage. The set was tied, 13-13, when UWL's
Gabrialla Johnson had a kill and a Saint Mary's (Minn.) hitting error gave the Eagles a two-point lead. UWL would not trail the rest of the set. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut it to 19-18 before a
Anna Rossner kill, hitting error from the Cardinals and a
Kaity Coisman kill gave UWL a four-point lead. The Cardinals' ball handling error and
Morgan Barker aces gave the Eagles a 24-18 lead. Saint Mary's (Minn.) recorded a hitting error for the final point.
Ella Luoma finished with 12 digs in Tuesday's win.
In the third set, UWL scored the first three points and raced out to a 5-1 lead. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut it to 8-7 on a Allison Wu kill, but UWL scored the next two points for a 10-7 lead. After the Cardinals scored the next two points, the Eagles went on a 3-0 run to lead 13-9. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut it to 15-13, but the Cardinals could get no closer the rest of the set. Abbie Stigler's kill for Saint Mary's (Minn.) made it 23-21, but back-to-back kills from
Brianne Korducki and
Megan Adams gave UWL the victory.
Korducki led UWL with 11 kills while Johnson and Weisensel each finished with six. Weisensel hit .364 (6-2-11) for the match. Adams led the Eagles with 24 assists and 15 digs as UWL hit .211 (37-17-95). Adams also had five kills and two aces while hitting .833 (5-0-6).
Ella Luoma added 12 digs.
Stigler led Saint Mary's (Minn.) with nine kills while Ciarra McNally finished with five. Mandy Schmidt had 10 assists and Larkin Clem eight as the Cardinals hit .034 (22-19-88). Hannah Herrem had a team-high 10 digs in the match.
UWL returns to action Friday, October 28 hosting 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
