La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-1 (23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25) to 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Friday night in Mitchell Hall in its final conference match of the season. The Eagles drop to 12-17 overall and 1-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 22-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Gabrialla Johnson hit .333 (15-4-33) Friday night.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked 17th on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, took a 7-4 lead in the opening set on a Melanie Meyer kill, but UWL came back to force an 8-8 tie. After a 9-9 tie, UWL scored three straight points to take a 12-9 advantage on a block from
Brianne Korducki and
Anna Rossner. The Eagles later took a 17-14 lead, but the Pointers went on a 6-2 run to lead 20-19.
UWL responded with four straight points to make it 23-20. UW-Stevens Point had three hitting errors in the run while Korducki recorded a kill for UWL. The Pointers rallied to score the final five points to secure the opening set. The Eagles had a service error and three hitting errors in the run to make it 24-23 and Ashley Kopp recorded a kill for the final point.
The second set was tied, 6-6, when
Gabrialla Johnson and Korducki each had a kill and
Kaity Coisman and Johnson had block assists to give UWL a 9-6 lead. The Eagles took a 12-8 lead and later lead, 14-11, after
Anna Rossner's kill. The Pointers went on an 8-0 run to lead 19-14 highlighted by back-to-back aces from Kopp. UWL cut the deficit to 19-16, but could get no closer the rest of the set.
UWL came back to take the third set. Trailing 6-4, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take a 8-6 lead. UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 14-13, but a Korducki kill, Pointers' hitting error and Johnson kill gave UWL a 17-13 advantage. The Pointers later cut it to 18-17, but the Eagles scored seven of the last eight points after taking a timeout.
Madison Weisensel had a pair of kills and Ella Luoma two aces. UWL hit .237 (13-4-38) in the winning the third set.
Ella Luoma had three aces and 17 digs in the match.
There were 12 ties in the fourth set. UWL took a 18-16 advantage, but UW-Stevens Point took a 23-20 lead with a 7-2 run. The Eagles trailed, 24-21, but cut it to 24-23 on a Korducki kill and block from
Megan Adams and Coisman. Kopp's kill secured the final point of the match for the Pointers.
Korducki led UWL with 16 kills while Johnson finished with 15 and hit .333 (15-4-33). Weisensel added 10 kills. Adams led UWL with 38 assists as the Eagles hit .158 (50-26-152). Luoma led four players in double figures in digs with 17. Adams and Korducki each recorded a double-double as Adams registered 15 digs to go along with her 38 assists and Korducki finished with 14 digs and 16 kills.
Sydney Fedderly finished with 11 digs. UWL had 8.0 team blocks as Coisman finished with 5.0.
Kopp led UW-Stevens Point with a match-high 21 kills. Meyer and Olivia Paukner each had eight kills. Grace Michalske finished with 44 assists as the Pointers hit .166 (52-24-169). Emma Peterson led UW-Stevens Point with 14 digs while Michalske finished with 13, Kelsie Belfiori 12 and Kopp 11.
Madison Weisensel finished with 10 kills.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 29 hosting Wartburg College (Iowa) at 2:30 p.m. in the Eagles' regular-season finale. It will be Senior Day.
