La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team picked up its eighth shut out of the season as they defeated Luther College (Iowa) 5-0 Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. With the win, UWL, ranked 17th on the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, improves to 12-1-1 overall while Luther falls to 6-5-3.
Ainsley Allan would give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute as she scored her ninth goal of the season.
Ellie Behnke recorded the assist as she took the corner kick for the Eagles. Then in the 39th minute,
Lindsey Szymanski scored her fourth goal of the season to put UWL up 2-0.
Kaitlyn Kurtz and
Natalie Schisel each recorded an assist on the goal. The score remained 2-0 at the half as UWL out shot Luther 16-6 in the first half.
Sydney Halstead played all 90 minutes and helped Eagle defense recorded shutout
The Eagles did not take long to add to their lead in the second half as
Claire Cater scored her third goal of the season in the 48th minute.
Maggie Hernandez assisted Cater on the goal for the Eagles. Ten minutes later it was
Chelsea Gale's turn to get her name in the scoring column for her fifth goal of the season. It was once again Hernandez on the assist for the Eagles. Finishing the scoring for UWL was
Kaitlyn Kurtz in the 71st minute.
Camryn Hart and Schisel assisted Kurtz on the goal.
As a team, UWL finished with a 31-11 advantage in shots including ten shots on goal. Schisel led the Eagles with four saves while five others finished with three including Allan, Behnke, Hernandez,
Ellie Arndt and
Isabel Batley. Luther was led by Emma Lin and Maggie Haller with three shots each.
Sophia Anger and
Robin Blair combined for the shutout in goal for the Eagles. Anger finished with seven saves and Blair had one. Ken Vavricheck finished with five saves for the Norse.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and host UW-Stout at 2:00 pm.
