La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked 18th on the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 1-0 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 8-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC while the Pointers drop to 3-6-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Ellie Arndt had six shots Saturday.
Ainsley Allan scored the only goal of the game at 4:23, assisted by
Claire Cater. It was Allan's team-leading eighth goal of the season. UWL finished with 23 shots in the first half while holding UW-Stevens Point to two. The Eagles had all five of the game's corner kicks in the first 45:00.
UWL added 19 more shots in the second half to finish with 42 in the game, including 22 on goal. Allan totaled seven shots in the game, including six on goal.
Ellie Arndt finished with six shots while
Maggie Hernandez and
Alexis McMahon each had five. Arndt, Hernandez and McMahon each had two shots on goal. Cater,
Isabel Batley and
Kaitlyn Kurtz also each finished with two shots on goal.
Fifteen different players recorded a shot for UWL. The Eagles had nine corner kicks.
UW-Stevens Point finished with five shots, all coming on goal, as Jessica Camarato had two shots.
Sophia Anger recorded five saves Saturday.
Sophia Anger earned the shutout for UWL, finishing with five saves. Miranda Nieman recorded 21 saves for UW-Stevens Point.
It is UWL's fifth shutout of the season, including third in the last four games.
UWL returns to action Sunday, October 2 at MSOE (Wis.) at 4 p.m.
