Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four with a 73-59 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Quandt Fieldhouse. The Eagles, ranked 11th on D3hoops.com, improve to 11-2 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Ethan Anderson had 18 points in the win.
It's UWL's sixth straight victory over UW-Stevens Point, its longest streak since winning seven consecutive from 1974-77.
After the Pointers hit a three-point basket to open the game, the Eagles scored the game's next nine points to take a 9-3 lead. UW-Stevens Point went on a 6-0 run to force a 9-9 tie, but
Ethan Anderson's jumper and
Sean Suchomel three-pointer gave UWL a 14-9 advantage with 12:54 left in the first half. Garrett Nelson's two free throws with 11:57 remaining cut the Eagles' lead to 14-13.
UWL led 23-18 when it used a 6-0 run to lead 29-18 after
Seth Anderson's jumper with 6:31 left. UW-Stevens Point ended the half on a 11-4 run to cut its deficit to 33-29.
UW-Stevens Point tied the game at 33-33 with 17:23 left on a pair of Peter Timmerman free throws.
Seth Anderson's jumper gave UWL a 35-33 advantage, a lead the Eagles would hold the rest of the game. The Pointers cut the deficit to 39-35, but an 11-0 run gave the Eagles a 50-35 lead with 10:46 left on
Ethan Anderson's three-point play.
The Pointers cut it to 60-51 with 3:40 remaining, but UW-Stevens Point could get no closer the rest of the game.
Torrin Hannah had 13 points and three steals.
UWL shot 45.3% from the field Saturday, including 46.2% (six-of-13) from three-point range, and 79.2% (19-of-24) at the free throw line. The Eagles were 13-of-15 (86.7%) at the line in the second half.
Ethan Anderson led UWL with 18 points while
Seth Anderson recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and team-high 10 rebounds.
Ethan Anderson had seven rebounds.
Torin Hannah finished with 13 points and team-high three steals while
Wyatt Cook totaled nine points, six rebounds and team-high six assists.
UW-Stevens Point shot 39.6% from the field, including 26.1% (six-of-23) from three-point range, and 78.6% (11-of-14) at the line. Nelson led the Pointers with 18 points while Jake Buchanan finished with 12 and Timmerman 11. Four different players had four rebounds.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 12 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
