Second Half Run Leads to Road Win at UW-River Falls

River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 68-39 victory at UW-River Falls Wednesday night in Don Page Arena. The Eagles improve to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons drop to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

UWL never trailed Wednesday, scoring the first four points of the game. The Falcons trailed 8-4 when the Eagles scored the next five points to lead 13-4 with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter on a Paige Schumann free throw. UW-River Falls used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 13-11 on Annie Feines's jumper with :34 left, but Casandra Warmsley's jumper with :25 remaining gave UWL a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. 

UW-River Falls' Cassie Heinrichs hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter and cut the lead to 15-14, but UWL used a 9-0 run to take a 24-14 advantage with 7:19 left on Alana Gilles' jumper. The Eagles led, 28-21, at halftime.

UWL scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 35-21 lead and opened the second half on a 16-1 run overall to lead 44-22 on a Gilles jumper with 2:51 left. Emma Gamoke had a pair of three-point baskets in the run. UWL outscored UW-River Falls, 20-8, in the third quarter to take a 48-29 lead.

The Eagles went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter to make it 58-29. UWL led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.

UWL shot 48.2% from the field, including 40.0% (four-of-10) from three-point range, and 83.3% (10-of-12) at the free throw line. Nine of 10 players scored for the Eagles with Gilles finishing with a team-high 16 points. She was seven-of-nine from the field and two-of-two at the line. Gamoke finished with 13 points while Lexie Higgins totaled 12. Lauryn Milne and Gabby Ritchie each had eight points. Kyah Steiner had a game-high 10 rebounds with Warmsley finishing with eight. 

UW-River Falls shot 18.5% from the field Wednesday, including 17.2% (five-of-29) from three-point range, and 73.7% (14-of-19) at the line. Macy Nilsen led the Falcons with 12 points while Colie Justice finished with eight. Nilsen and Feine led UW-River Falls with four rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, January 15 hosting 11th-ranked UW-Eau Claire at 5 p.m.
