La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team improved to 4-1-1 on the season with a 4-0 win over Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Firebirds drop to 1-5.
It is UWL's second straight shutout win after a 4-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University September 12.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead Saturday as
Sophie Amundson scored at 12:37 with assists from
Natalie Schisel and
Sydney Halstead. UWL led, 1-0, at halftime. The Eagles finished with 10 shots in the first half while the Firebirds recorded two. UWL had seven corner kicks to Carthage's (Iowa) one in the first half.
Sophie Amundson had the game-winning goal Saturday.
Schisel made it 2-0 at 46:00 with an assist from
Rachael Janes. Janes then scored at 48:44 with an assist from Schisel for a 3-0 advantage and Amundson finished the scoring at 51:10 assisted by Janes and Schisel.
UWL had 28 shots in the game, including 14 on goal. Janes finished with five shots (four on goal) with one goal and two assists while Amundson had four shots (two on goal) with two goals. Schisel recorded three shots (two on goal) with one goal and three assists. It is the ninth time in school history a player recorded at least three assists in a game, and first since Natalie Herzog had three against MSOE (Wis.) on October 21, 2018.
Jennifer Tischaefer had a UWL record six assists versus Viterbo University (Wis.) on October 2, 1996.
Rachael Janes finished with one goal and two assists.
Janes, Amundson and Schisel combined for 12 shots with eight on goal while accounting for all four goals and six assists.
The Eagles had 12 corner kicks in the game.
Quinn Shannon and
Sophia Anger combined for the shutout for UWL with each recording one save.
Carthage (Wis.) finished with six shots with two on goal. Katie Talens had two shots. Sara Lieffrig had 10 saves for the Firebirds.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, September 21 at Wartburg College (Iowa) at 6 p.m.
