Box Score 2 St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team split a pair of matches at the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Friday in the Ericksen Center. The Eagles fell, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) to host Northwestern (Minn.) before coming back to earn a 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 19-25, 25-19) victory over the University of Dubuque (Iowa).
UWL is now 6-1 on the season.
Northwestern (Minn.) and UWL were tied, 6-6, in the opening set, when the Eagles of Northwestern (Minn.) went on a 5-0 run. UWL later cut the lead to 12-11 on a
Brianne Korducki kill, but Northwestern (Minn.) scored the next seven points to lead 19-11. The Eagles could get no closer than five points the rest of the set.
UWL raced out an 11-3 lead in the second set after a pair of
Jackie Oetterer aces, but Northwestern (Minn.) used an 8-3 run to cut it to 14-11. The Eagles later tied the set at 17-17 and 18-18 on a Kendra Hardy kill. Caitlyn Pruis and Gabrielle Straub hit back-to-back kills for a 20-18 advantage. UWL cut it to 20-19, but Northwestern (Minn.) scored five of the final six points.
Northwestern (Minn.) led 13-12 in the third set when it used a 5-1 run to lead 18-13. UWL later cut it to 21-20 on a pair of
Emma Lawrence kills, but the Eagles of Northwestern (Minn.) held on for the victory.
Lawrence led UWL with 15 kills with Korducki finishing with six. Oetterer and
Megan Adams each had 14 assists while
Sophie Quelle finished with a team-high 13 digs. Lawrence recorded a double-double with 10 digs. UWL hit .125 (34-18-128) for the match.
Straub led Northwestern (Minn.) with 12 kills with Abby Glanzer finishing with 11. Sydney Schwitters recorded 33 assists and Marylyn Schroyer 23 digs. Hardy added 17 digs and Glanzer 11. Northwestern (Minn.), ranked 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association, hit .233 (40-13-116).
Versus Dubuque (Iowa), the Spartans took an 8-5 lead in the first set before the Eagles scored the next four points to take the lead. Dubuque (Iowa) responded with four straight points to take a 12-9 advantage, but UWL took the three points to force a 12-12 tie. The set was tied, 16-16, when UWL scored six straight points to lead, 22-16. Dubuque (Iowa) could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
UWL took a 23-20 lead in the second set on a
Anna Rossner kill, but Dubuque (Iowa) forced a tie at 23-23. The set was tied, 24-24, when Rossner and Korducki hit back-to-back kills to give the Eagles the second set win.
Trailing 17-16 in the third set, Dubuque (Iowa) scored four straight points to take a 20-17 lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
In the fourth set, the teams traded 4-0 runs to start the game. UWL later trailed, 15-14, but went on a 6-0 run to lead 20-15. Dubuque (Iowa) could get no closer than four points the rest of the set.
Lawrence led UWL again with 18 kills with Korducki finishing with 10 and Rossner nine. Oetterer had a team-high 24 assists with Adams finishing with 19. Quelle led three players in double figures in digs with 24. Lawrence and Adams each totaled 17. UWL hit .165.
Emma Powell and Julie May led Dubuque (Iowa) with 10 kills each while Kate Messino and Kaylynn Murray each ahd 13 assists. Katie Wright led the Spartans with 25 digs while Powell registered 16 and Messino 14. The Spartans hit .099 (33-18-151).
UWL returns to action Saturday, September 11 at Augsburg University (Minn.) at 2 p.m.
