Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2021 campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-8) win at Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday night. The Norse were also playing in their season opener.
The Eagles never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a 5-1 lead. Luther (Iowa) later tied the set, 12-12, but a pair of attack errors by the Norse gave the Eagles a two-point lead. The set was tied, 15-15, but a pair of kills and service ace from
Emma Lawrence gave UWL a three-point lead. Luther (Iowa) could get no closer the rest of the opening set.
Luther (Iowa) took a 4-1 lead in the second set and later led, 9-6. UWL scored the set's next four points, including a
Sydney Fedderly kill, to take a 10-9 advantage. The set was tied, 11-11, when the Eagles secured the next four points to make it 15-11. The Norse went on a 5-1 run to force a 16-16 tie, but
Kaity Coisman's kill and
Isabelle Jensen's ace gave UWL a two-point lead. Luther (Iowa) cut it to 18-17, but UWL finished the set winning seven of the last nine points.
The third and final set was tied at 3-3 when UWL went on a 7-2 run to make it 10-5. Luther (Iowa) could get no closer the rest of the way as UWL scored 14 of the final 15 points of the set.
Lawrence led UWL with 10 kills while Coisman,
Gabrialla Johnson and
Liz Lansink each had seven. The Eagles hit .271 (38-15-85) for the match, including .391 (11-2-23) in the third set.
Megan Adams had 13 assists and
Jackie Oetterer 10.
Sophie Quelle led the Eagles with 10 digs. Lawrence and Johnson each had four aces while UWL recorded 6.0 total team blocks.
UWL is now 4-0 all-time in season-openers under head coach
Amber Dunn.
Sarina Stortz led Luther (Iowa) with five kills as the team hit -.072 (14-19-69) overall. Hailey Becker finished with 12 assits while Anna Jenewein had nine digs. The Norse had 3.0 blocks.
UWL returns to action Friday, September 3 with a pair of matches at the Ripon College (Wis.) Invitational. The Eagles face Northland College (Wis.) at 3 p.m. and host Ripon (Wis.) at 7 p.m.
