UWL Ends Regular Season with Split Versus UW-Oshkosh

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team completed its 2021 regular season with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader split with UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Titans took the opener, 3-0, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 6-0. UWL is now 14-13 overall and 8-6 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh is 20-10 overall and 10-4 in the conference.

UWL honored its six seniors, Katie Block, Maddie Muelken, Allison Oster, Sabrina Scardamaglia, Mia Schmidtke and Sydne Shattuck at the conclusion of the doubleheader.

Maddie Fink (13-3) earned the complete-game shutout in the opener for UW-Oshkosh, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four. 

The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Amanda Mc Ilhany doubled with one out and went to third on a wild pitch. After a ground out, Ana Iliopoulos singled to knock in Mc Ilhany for the first run of the game.

Nicole Trussoni had a hit in each game on Friday.


UW-Oshkosh added to its lead with a pair of runs in the seventh. Mc Ilhany singled to start the inning and advanced to second on Emily Cliver's sacrifice bunt.  Mc Ilhany scored after Iliopoulos reached on a UWL throwing error. Acacia Tupa later scored on Hannah Ritter's infield single to make it 3-0. 

Muelken (7-7) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and one run with three strikeouts. Elise Weinzierl pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and two runs (both unearned) while striking out two. The Eagles had four hits, one each from Jordyn McCormack, Kendra Leis, Shattuck and Nicole Trussoni. UWL did not advance a runner past second base in the game. 

UW-Oshkosh totaled 10 hits in the nightcap with Mc Ilhany going 2-for-3 with two runs. Ritter and Gabby Builkema each had two hits. 

Shattuck (6-2) earned the complete-game shutout for UWL in the nightcap. She went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out three. 

Schmidtke's fielder's choice in the bottom of the second scored Shattuck to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. UWL tallied five runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 advantage. Block singled to start the inning and went to second on McCormack's single. Leis followed with a single to load the bases with no outs. Shattuck then delivered a two-run single knocking in Block and McCormack to make it 3-0. Kenzie Goethel and Emily Lyman pinch ran for the Eagles and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.  After a ground out, Schmidtke followed with a two-run single for a 5-0 lead. Lauren Kidd pinch ran for Schmidtke and scored on a Trussoni RBI double.

The Eagles finished with 10 hits in the nightcap as all nine starters recorded at least one. Along with earning the win on the mound, Shattuck went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Schmidtke finished with three RBI.   

Claire Petrus (3-3) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out two. Five different players had a hit for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh only advanced runner to third base in the second game.

UWL returns to action Tuesday, May 11 in the WIAC Quarterfinals. Game time, opponent and location will be determined on Saturday, May 8.
