UWL Leads WIAC Championships; Sadowski Wins Long Jump

UWL had three of the top-six finishers in Friday's pole vault.

 The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team leads after the first day of action Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships (presented by Culver's) David A. Smith Stadium at Ramer Field at UW-River Falls. 

The Eagles have 59.0 team points while UW-Eau Claire is second with 42.5 and UW-Whitewater third with 41.0. UW-Stout is fourth (36.5) followed by UW-Stevens Point (23.0), UW-Oshkosh (18.0), UW-Platteville (12.0) and UW-River Falls (2.0).

UWL is striving for its 30th consecutive league title and 56th in school history.
 
UWL's Samuel Sadowski won an individual conference title on Friday in the long jump (24-0 3/4). It is his second straight WIAC championship in the long jump after winning the title in 2019. He joins Bill Patza (1981-82), Brad Hall (1988-89), Kellen McCrary (2010-11), Isaac Vazquez (2012-13) and Dominique Neloms (2014-15) in school history to win back-to-back crowns in the event. 

The Eagles' Nick Crary finished fourth (22-7) and Chase Roehl seventh (22-1) in the long jump on Friday. 
 
Other top finishes in the field events included Joseph Schmida second (178-6) and Alec Morrison fifth (171-7) in the javelin throw while Tommy Knoche was third (15-9), Logan Larson fifth (15-3) and Sashi Popke sixth (14-9) in the pole vault.

UWL had three of the top-eight finishers in the 10,000-meter run.

 
On the track, Ethan Gregg finished second (30:04.34), Isaac Wegner fourth (31:00.83) and Parker Huhn eighth (31:22.60) in the 10,000-meter run.  The Eagles' Corey Fairchild was sixth (9:27.46) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
 
After five events in the decathlon, UWL's Gunnar Block is in sixth-place with 2,820 points. Friday's events included the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash. The event concludes Saturday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run. 
 
In the preliminary action on the track, Dillon Murman (14.68), Carson Reilly (14.99) and Ben Jones (15.50) all advanced to Saturday's final in the 110-meter hurdles while Andrew Pischke (58.36) and Dirk Lueck (58.84) advanced in the 400-meter hurdles.  
 
Seth Holden, Josh Koenecke, Spencer Reichart and Troy DeBruin advanced to finals in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Holden (10.48), Koenecke (10.66), Reichart (10.73) and DeBruin (10.73) advanced in the 100-meter dash. Holden (21.56), DeBruin (21.59), Reichart (21.91) and Koenecke (21.91) advanced to Saturday's 200-meter dash final.

UWL had a pair of runners advance in the 400-meter dash with Jake Sullivan (48.68) and Caden Pearce (49.01) while Tyler Kisting advanced in the 800-meter run (1:56.29).
