La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team completed a four-game series sweep with a pair of wins over Finlandia University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the opener, 37-7 in seven innings, and the nightcap, 10-0 in seven innings. UWL improves to 20-10 overall and 12-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while Finlandia (Mich.) drops to 0-28 overall and 0-20 in the conference.
Jack Olver had two home runs and six RBI in the opener.
The Eagles set a single-game school record with 37 runs and 32 RBI in the opener. UWL broke the record of 32 runs against Macalester College (Minn.) on March 16, 2014 and the single-game record of 26 RBI set against Loras College (Iowa) on May 7, 1965. The 37 runs and 32 RBI are also second in WIAC single-game history. UW-Oshkosh set a league record with 43 runs and 39 RBI versus Huron College on March 15, 2003.
UWL totaled 26 hits in Saturday's opener, third-most in school history. The Eagles had a school record 27 hits against UW-Superior on May 2, 1981 and Concordia University Wisconsin on March 16, 2011.
Finlandia (Mich.) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Jordan D'Angelo's triple, but UWL responded with 13 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the inning. The first 10 batters scored in the inning.
Brennan Schmitt hit a grand slam in the inning followed by a
Mac Born solo home run.
Jack Kelly later hit a two-run home run in the inning. It marked UWL's first inning with three home runs since a 15-2 victory over Finlandia (Mich.) on May 3, 2019 when Schmitt,
Ethan Gerstner and
Nate Heili accomplished the feat.
UWL tied a school record with 10 hits in the second inning Saturday. The Eagles had 10 hits vs. UW-Superior on May 6, 1995 and Occidental College (Calif.) on March 19, 2000. The 13 runs in the inning is tied for fourth-most in school history.
The Eagles tallied eight runs in the third inning highlighted by
Andrew Rajkovich's two-run home run and Born's two-run single. UWL scored five runs in the fourth with Rajkvovich connecting on a three-run home run.
Jack Olver highlighted UWL's four-run fifth inning with a two-run home run and the Eagles added seven runs in the sixth with Olver hitting a grand slam.
UWL's seven home runs in the game ranks second in school history after hitting nine against UW-Superior on May 2, 1981. The two grand slams ties a single-game school record set versus Loras (Iowa) on May 7, 1965.
All 16 position players scored a run for UWL in the opener with Rajkovich and
Parker Plume each finishing with four.

Shane Coker, Olver, Kelly and
Ty Hamilton each scored three times. Rajkovich went 4-for-7 with five RBI while Olver finished 3-for-3 with six RBI. Plume went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Born also had six RBI, finishing 2-for-5 overall. UWL drew 14 walks in the game, tied for second-most in school history.
Sawyer Phillips (4-2) earned the win for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and one walk while striking out six.
Mac Born had eight RBI in Saturday's doubleheader.
Eastyn Culp (0-4) suffered the loss for Finlandia (Mich.), going 1.0 inning, allowing five hits, nine runs and four walks. The Lions totaled nine hits with Jacob Mead going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Sawyer Murrell was 2-for-2 with two runs and a home run while Nik Geiser finished 2-for-3 with a run.
UWL took a 3-0 in the bottom of the third in the nightcap.
Zach Carney singled with one out and moved to second after
Jonathan Wizner was hit-by-pitch. Schmitt was also hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Born followed with single to left field to score Carney with the game's first run. Coker then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 and after a strikeout, Kelly was hit-by-pitch to give UWL a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles tallied six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Born's RBI single scored Carney to make it 4-0 and Coker followed with a two-run single knocking in Wizner and Schmitt. Kelly later hit a two-out three-run home run in the inning. Wizner's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored
Jake Masini ended the game.
Brady Schmitt (2-0) earned the complete-game victory, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk with a career-high seven strikeouts. The Eagles totaled 11 hits in the nightcap with Carney going 3-for-5 with two runs. Wizner, Born and Coker each had two hits with Wizner scoring twice. Born had two RBI and Coker three. Kelly finished with a team-high four RBI.
Mead (0-2) took the loss for Finlandia (Mich.), allowing two hits, thee runs and three walks with two strikeouts. Three different Lions had a hit in the game.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, May 4 with a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m.
