Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to UW-Whitewater Monday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Warhawks took the opener, 3-2 in nine innings, and the nightcap, 11-5. UWL falls to 9-10 on the season while UW-Whitewater improves to 18-8.

The opener was scoreless until the top of the sixth when UW-Whitewater scored an unearned run. Meg Cohrs reached on a UWL throwing error with one out and advanced to second on a Kaleigh O'Brien single. Cohrs was replaced by pinch-runner Alexis Addante who went to third on Sophia Kinjeski's infield single to load the bases. Taylor Briehl was hit-by-pitch with two outs to score the game's first run. 

UWL took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of unearned runs. Megan Scheidt reached on a throwing error to start the inning moved to second on Sabrina Scardamaglia's sacrifice bunt. Katie Block followed with a an RBI double to score Scheidt with the tying run. After a fly-out, Kendra Leis delivered a two-out single to knock in Block to make it 2-1.

The Warhawks tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out home run from Nikki Mikosz. UW-Whitewater scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Mikosz doubled to start the inning and replaced by pinch-runner Hannah Wusterbarth. She moved to third on a Cohrs' single. UWL's Rachel Niederkorn replaced starter Elise Weinzierl and O'Brien singled home Wusterbarth with the eventual game-winning run.

Weinzierl (0-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing 13 hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out six. Niederkorn went 1.0 inning, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Seven different players had a hit for the Eagles with Block and Leis recording one RBI each. 

Block extended her hitting streak to 18 games, tying the school record of Brittany Baldwin in 2017.

Marissa Adams (2-1) earned the win, going 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Kate Cleveland started, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs (both unearned) and one strikeout. The Warhawks finished with 13 hits with O'Brien going 4-for-5 with an RBI. Mikosz and Cohrs each went 3-for-5.

In the nightcap, UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lauren Winkler doubled with one out and advanced to third on Nicole Trussoni's two-out single. Both runners scored on Lauren Kidd's double to left field. UW-Whitewater quickly responded in the top of the second to tie the game on back-to-back home runs from O'Brien and Meghan Dunning. 

The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the third Kenzie Goethel singled to start the inning and went to second on Winkler's sacrifice bunt. Emily Knight's single moved Goethel to third, who then scored on a Nicole Trussoni sacrifice fly. The Warhawks took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on Vera Pflugradt's two-out triple. UWL tied it in the bottom of the fourth as Gillian Rinehart doubled and pinch-runner Block scored on Grace Scharfenberg's RBI single.

UW-Whitewater regained the lead in the fifth with Addante scoring on Delaney Becker's ground out to make it 5-4. The Warhawks scored six runs on two hits and four Eagles' errors in the seventh. Trussoni doubled and scored on Rinehart's double in the bottom of the seventh for UWL.

Weinzierl (0-3) took the loss in the second game, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and seven runs (two earned) with one strikeout. Niederkorn started, going 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and one walk while striking out three. UWL finished with 11 hits. Goethel, Trussoni, Rinehart and Emily Knight each had two hits. Kidd had two RBI while Trussoni scored twice. 

Annie Morelli (2-0) picked up the victory for UW-Whitewater, going 1.0 inning in relief. She allowed three hits, one run and one walk while striking out one. Rhiann Dick earned her first save of the season, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and three walks with four strikeouts. Kathryn Kinsella started, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and three runs with two strikeouts. The Warhawks also totaled 11 hits with Dunning going 3-for-4 with three runs. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 28 at UW-Stout for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The first game will be a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest, made up from being postponed on April 10 in La Crosse. The second game between UWL and UW-Stout will be non-conference.
