La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a 4-2 win over UW-Stout in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The second game was postponed due to rain. UWL improves to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stout drops to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
The second game of the doubleheader will be made up when the teams play at UW-Stout on April 28. The first game of the doubleheader will be a conference contest with UWL being the home team. The second game will be non-conference.
Maddie Muelken earned the complete-game victory.
Maddie Muelken (4-2) earned the complete-game victory Saturday, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks with five strikeouts.
UW-Stout took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Korin Hall walked to lead-off the game and scored on a one-out two-run home run by Shannon Jones. UWL left seven runners on base through the first three innings, including the bases-loaded in the first and third.
Sabrina Scardamaglia had three hits.
The Eagles, winners of six straight games, tied the game with two runs in the fourth.
Anna Jensen singled with one out and replaced by pinch-runner
Emily Lyman.
Emily Knight singled to put runners on first and second.
Sabrina Scardamaglia's infield single loaded the bases.
Katie Block followed with an infield single to score Lyman and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Kendra Leis then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Knight and tie the game.
UWL took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Jensen was hit-by-pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on
Paige Rhyner's sacrifice bunt. Scardamaglia reached on a UW-Stout fielding error and advanced to second on the play with Jensen moving to third. Block followed with an RBI single to score Jensen with the go-ahead run. Leis then singled and knocking in Scardamaglia to give UWL a 4-2 lead.
Kendra Leis had two hits and two RBI.
UWL finished with 12 hits as Block went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Scardamaglia finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Leis went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Sommer Kunstmann (0-5) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching a complete-game. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 12 hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out one. The Blue Devils totaled four hits as Jones finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 14 at UW-Eau Claire at 3 p.m.
