UWL Drops Conference Doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire Friday afternoon at Bollinger Fields. The Blugolds took the opener, 1-0, and the nightcap, 2-1.  UWL falls to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC while UW-Eau Claire improves to 16-8 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC. 

Maddie Muelken suffered the loss in the opener, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out six. 

UW-Eau Claire scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second inning. Ellie Decker reached on a UWL error with one out and went to second on a ground out. After Megan Maruna was hit-by-pitch, Mikayla McEnery singled with two outs to knock in Decker. 

UWL finished with two hits in the opener, one each from Katie Block and Jordyn McCormack.  The Eagles left two runners on base in the first and seventh innings. 

Morgan Sivak picked up the victory in first game for UW-Eau Claire. She went 7.0 innings, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The Blugolds totaled three hits in the opener as Abbey Place went 2-for-3 and McEnery 1-for-2. 

In the nightcap, UWL took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third. Sabrina Scardamaglia walked and went to second on Block's sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored when Sydne Shattuck reached on a UW-Eau Claire error. Jayden Hodgson scored on Maruna's single to tie the game. The Blugolds took the lead when Katelyn Yute scored on an Eagles' error with two outs in the inning. 

UW-Eau Claire took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. 

Elise Weinzierl took the loss for UWL, going 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five. The Eagles had seven hits in the second game of the doubleheader with Kendra Leis finishing 2-for-4. 

Madi Zerr earned the win for UW-Eau Claire, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run (unearned) and three walks while striking out six. Abbey Cook picked up the save, going 1.0 inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout. The Blugolds finished with six hits. Place went 2-for-3.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 17 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. at North Campus Field.
