UWL Drops Regular-Season Finale at UW-Platteville

Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell, 73-50, at UW-Platteville Friday night on Bo Ryan Court in the regular-season finale for both teams.  The Eagles, ranked 14th on d3hoops.com, drops to 6-2 overall while the Pioneers, ranked 10th on d3hoops.com, improves to 6-2.  UWL is 5-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) West Division games while UW-Platteville is 5-1 in WIAC East Division games. 

UWL took an 8-7 lead on an Ethan Anderson layup with 13:12 left in the first half, but UW-Platteville used a 9-0 run to lead 16-8 with 10:59 remaining after Drew Gunnink's three-point field goal.  The Pioneers would never trail the rest of the game. The Eagles cut the deficit to 23-22 with 5:24 left on Henry Noone's three-pointer, but the Pioneers scored the next nine points for a 32-22 advantage with 1:41 left on a pair of Kyle Tuma free throws.  UW-Platteville led, 34-26, at halftime. 

UWL trailed, 39-28, when it went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 39-36 with 13:07 left after Anderson's layup. UW-Platteville scored the next six points for a 45-36 lead with 9:44 left after Logan Pearson's jumper. The Eagles could get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.

UWL shot 30.4% from the field, including 17.4% (four-of-23) from three-point range, and 80.0% (12-of-15) at the line.  Ethan Anderson, Seth Anderson and Will Fuhrmann led the Eagles with eight points each. Sean Suchomel had a team-high six rebounds.

UW-Platteville shot 44.6% from the field, including 31.8% (seven-of-22) from three-point range, and 84.2% (16-of-19) at the free throw line.  Tuma led the Pioneers with 20 points while Pearson finished with 11. Quentin Shields totaled nine points and team-high nine rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Monday, March 1 hosting UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC Quarterfinal at 3 p.m.
