UWL Earns Win at Virginia Wesleyan; Captures Tipoff Title

Virginia Beach, Va. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked 15th on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, captured the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament with a 65-54 win over host Virginia Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season while the Marlins, receiving votes on the D3hoops.com Poll, drop to 1-1.

Virginia Wesleyan took a 3-2 lead on a Eric Rowland three-pointer, but Wyatt Cook's three-point field goal and Sean Suchomel layup gave UWL a 7-3 lead. Rowland's second three-pointer cut the deficit to 7-6, but a 7-0 run by the Eagles made it 14-6. Seth Anderson's three-point play with 13:13 left in the first half ended the scoring run. The Marlins later cut it to 28-25 before the Eagles took a 34-28 halftime advantage. 

Tim Fisher's jumper for Virginia Wesleyan cut it to 36-32 with 17:10 remaining in the game when UWL went on a 14-2 run to lead 50-34 with 12:45 left on Anderson's jumper. The Marlins could get no closer than 11 points in the second half. 

UWL shot 50.0% from the field Saturday, including 27.3% (three-of-11) from three-point range, and 80.0% (16-of-20) at the free throw line. Ethan Anderson led the Eagles with 19 points while Wyatt Cook and Austin Westra each finished with 12. Seth Anderson added nine points, five rebounds and team-leading four assists. Sean Suchomel had a team-high seven rebounds and four steals while adding three assists.

Virginia Wesleyan shot 36.4% from the field, including 27.6% (eight-of-29) from three-point range, and 75.0% (six-of-eight) at the line. Jordan Crump led the Marlins with 18 points with Fisher finishing with 16. Fisher recorded a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. 

Ethan Anderson, Westra and Suchomel were named to the all-tournament team with Anderson earning MVP honors.

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 13 hosting Marian University (Wis.) in its home opener at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
