UWL Defeats Marian in Home Opener

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked 15th on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Preseason Poll, picked up its third straight win by the score of 79-48 over Marian University (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Mitchell Hall.  The win improves the Eagles to 3-0 on the season while the Sabres fall to 1-1 overall.
 
The Eagles, playing their home opener, scored nine of the first 10points of the game as they never trailed in the contest. Sean Suchomel made back-to-back three-pointers followed by a three-pointer from Wyatt Cook to spark the early run.

Defensively, UWL would only give up 13 points in the first half as their offense was hitting on all cylinders. The Eagles finished the opening period shooting 16-34 (47.1%) from the floor and 5-10 (50%) from the free throw line. After hitting eight of their first nine three-pointers, the Eagles finished 10-16 (62.5%). Suchomel and Ethan Anderson each scored 12 points in the opening half to lead the Eagles.

UWL would take its largest lead of the game at 50-14 on a three-pointer by Cook and Marian would not get any closer than 70-45 the rest of the way.
 
The Eagles finished the game shooting 28-66 (42.4%) from the floor including 12-22 (54.4%) from three-point range. They were also 11-18 (61.1%) from the free throw line. Defensively, UWL held Marian to 18-56 (32.1%) from the floor and 5-23 (21.7%) from behind the arc. The Eagles finished with a 45-41 advantage in rebounds.
 
UWL had four players in double figures led by Anderson with 19 points while Cook finished with 15, Suchomel added 12 and Henry Noone had 11. Cook led the Eagles with seven rebounds while Anderson and Suchomel each had six.
 
Tyler Gouin led the Sabres of Marian with 14 points while Dylan Gmeiner and David Britton each finished with 10 points. Scott Paulus had a team high eight rebounds.
 
UWL returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Minneapolis to play Augsburg University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
