Fourth Quarter Rally Leads to Home Win over Edgewood

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball earned a 58-55 win over Edgewood College (Wis.) Friday afternoon in the Gundersen Hotel & Suites Thanksgiving Classic. UWL improves to 6-1 on the season while Edgewood (Wis.) drops to 0-4. 

The game was tied, 8-8, after the first quarter as the teams combined to shoot seven-of-29 from the field. Edgewood (Wis.) took a 23-14 lead with 3:41 left in the first half after going on a 11-2 run. UWL later cut the deficit to 25-21 with 1:53 remaining in the first half on Gabby Ritchie's three-pointer. Edgewood (Wis.) led 27-21 on a Eden Bonser jumper, but a free throw from Kailee Meeker and Paige Schumann jumper for UWL cut the lead to 27-24 at halftime.

Edgewood (Wis.) led by as many as seven in the third quarter, including 39-32 with 5:23 remaining after Kenzie Senffner's pull-up jumper. UWL scored the game's next six points to cut it to 39-38 with 4:12 left on a Casandra Warmsley jumper in the paint. Emma Klein hit three free throws with 2:35 remaining to give Edgewood (Wis.) a 44-38 advantage, but Ritchie's jumper and a free throw from Lauryn Milne cut the lead to 44-41. Klein's three-point play with :20 left gave Edgewood (Wis.) at 47-41 lead after three quarters.

Vivian Guerrero's layup gave Edgewood (Wis.) a 49-42 lead with 7:41 left in the game and the Eagles later led 51-44 with 5:58 remaining. Carly Coulthart's layup and Emma Gamoke's three-point basket for UWL cut the deficit to 51-49. Schumann tied the contest, 51-51, won a field goal off a Edgewood (Wis.) turnover with 4:05 left. Diamond Pikulyk's layup with 3:46 remaining gave Edgewood (Wis.) a 53-51 lead. Warmsley hit one-of-two at the line with 3:27 left to cut it to 53-52 and Schumann's three-point field goal with 1:49 remaining gave UWL a 55-53 lead. 

Edgewood (Wis.) missed a jumper with :24 left and Gamoke hit one-of-two free throws to give UWL a 56-53 lead. The Eagles missed a layup with :08 remaining, but Warmsley missed a pair of free throws for UWL . Edgewood (Wis.) turned the ball over on its next possession and Schumann converted both free throws with :02 left for a 58-53 lead. Bonser hit a jumper at the buzzer for Edgewood. UWL outscored Edgewood (Wis.), 17-8, in the final period.

UWL shot 32.8% from the field, including 18.8% (three-of-16) from three-point range, and 56.5% (13-of-23) at the line. Ritchie led the Eagles with 13 points while Schumann finished with 11.Schumann had a game-high seven assists. Lexie Higgins and Gamoke each had eight points with Gamoke recording a game-high 10 rebounds.

Edgewood (Wis.) shot 38.3% from the field, including 9.5% (two-of-21) from three-point range, and 63.6% (seven-of-11) at the free throw line. Klein led the Eagles with 18 points while Abby Shane finished with nine and Guerrero eight. Guerrero and Pikulyk each had six rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 27 hosting Simpson College (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
