Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-2 (12-25, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8) at UW-Oshkosh Tuesday night in Kolf Sports Center in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships (presented by Culver's) First Round. The Eagles drop to 20-11 on the season while the Titans improve to 19-11.
UW-Oshkosh, the tournament's fourth-seed, advances to play at top-seeded UW-Eau Claire in the tournament semifinals on November 4.
Megan Adams had 20 assists and nine digs.
Fifth-seeded UWL took the opening set, 25-12, while hitting .379 (12-1-29). The set was tied 7-7 when the
Liz Lansink's kill and a Titans' hitting error gave UWL a two-point lead. UW-Oshkosh cut it to 9-8, but four straight points gave UWL a 13-8 advantage. UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 14-10, but would get no closer in the first set as UWL scored 11 of the final 13 points.
The Eagles raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but the Titans came back to take a 9-8 lead after a pair of Eagles' hitting errors. The set was later tied, 15-15, on
Emma Lawrence's kills for UWL. Two hitting errors by the Eagles gave the Titans an 17-15 lead. Lawrence's kill for the Eagles later tied it at 21-21. Robyn Kirsch's kill and UWL hitting error gave UW-Oshkosh a 23-21 lead. Another kill from Lawrence made it 23-22, but UW-Oshkosh scored the final two points to even the match at one set each.
UW-Oshkosh scored five of the first six points in the third set, but UWL responded with four straight points to it at 5-5. The Eagles trailed 17-14 when they went on a 6-0 run to lead 20-17.
Brianne Korducki,
Jackie Oetterer and
Gabrialla Johnson each had kills for UWL. The Titans quickly responded scoring the final eight points of the set to win, 25-20. Riley Kindt had two kills and Madyson Pearson one for the last three points.Â
UWL hit .130 for the match.
The Titans took a 7-5 lead in the fourth set when the Eagles used a 7-0 run to lead 12-7. After a UW-Oshkosh timeout, the Titans scored the next six points to regain a 13-12 advantage. UW-Oshkosh later led, 19-17, but UWL scored seven straight points to take a 24-19 lead. The Titans scored the next three points, but Korducki's kill gave the Eagles the win to even the match at two sets.
UWL, receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, led 7-5 in the fifth and deciding set after an
Anna Rossner and forcing a UW-Oshkosh timeout. The Titans went on a 9-0 run to lead 14-7. Courtney Pearson had three straight kills in the run. UWL cut it to 14-8 on a Lawrence kill, but Pearson's fourth kill in the set secured the win for UW-Oshkosh.
Lawrence led UWL with 23 kills while Korducki finished with 12 and Johnson eight.Â
Megan Adams recorded 20 assists with adding 18. The Eagles hit .130 as a team.Â
Lawrence, Oetterer and
Sydney Fedderly each had 14 digs for UWL while
Sophie Quelle finished with 12. The Eagles had 6.0 blocks.
Carissa Sundholm led UW-Oshkosh with 16 kills while Kindt finished with eight. Emma Kiekhofer registered 24 assists and Kalli Mau 17 as the Titans hit .126. Abby Fregien led five players in double figures in digs with 20. Kiekhofer recorded 16, Sundholm 14, Mau 13 and Amelia Hust 12. UW-Oshkosh had 8.0 blocks.
