Volleyball Drops Pair of Non-Conference Matches

St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, dropped a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College's (Minn.) Gus Young Court.  The Eagles, now 15-6 on the season, fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24) to St. Olaf College (Minn.) before falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-18) to host Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.). 

St. Olaf (Minn.) used a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead in the opening set on Saturday. UWL cut the lead to 11-7, but could get no closer the rest of the set. The Oles scored the next three points to lead 14-7 on a Nora Zielke kill. After UWL cut it to 14-8, St. Olaf (Minn.) went on a 5-0 run.  The Eagles made it 20-14 with a 5-0 run, but the Oles secured the first set victory. 

UWL took a 11-9 lead in the second set when St. Olaf (Minn.) scored four straight points to take a two-point lead.  The Eagles used a 3-0 run to lead 15-14, but the Oles went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-15 and went onto to win the second set. 

The third set was tied 13 times with neither team leading by more than three points. The set was tied, 24-24, when St. Olaf (Minn.) took the final two points on UWL's service and hitting error. 

Emma Lawrence led UWL with nine kills while Brianne Korducki finished with six. Jackie Oetterer had 14 assists and Megan Adams nine as the Eagles hit .088.  Lawrence had a team-high 10 digs. UWL finished with 3.0 team blocks. 

Zielke led St. Olaf (Minn.) with 11 kills with Catherine Moore finishing with 10. Waverly Thao registered 24 assists and 12 digs for the Oles, who improved to 9-9 on the season. Brynne Gray had 13 assists while Kylie Reardon totaled 10 digs. St. Olaf (Minn.) finished with 6.0 team blocks. 

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), also receiving votes on this week's AVCA Top-25 Poll, raced out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set Saturday. UWL cut it to 6-4, but could get no closer.  The second was tied, 11-11, when the Golden Gusties scored eight of the next nine points for a 19-12 lead. The Eagles cut it to 22-17 before the Golden Gusties scored the final three points. 

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) scored the first six points of the third set before UWL rallied to cut it to 14-11. The Golden Gusties went on a 5-1 run to lead 19-12. 

Lawrence led UWL with eight kills with Korducki, Sydney Fedderly and Gabrialla Johnson each finishing with four.  Adams finished with 10 assists with the Eagles hitting .095. Adams had a team-high 12 digs as UWL finished with 4.0 team blocks. 

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), now 18-4 on the season, was led by Kate Holtan with 17 kills. Kasie Tweet finished with 24 assists as the Golden Gusties hit .269. Hailey Embacher recorded 12 digs and Marlee Turn finished with 10. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) totaled 3.0 team blocks.

UWL returns to action Tuesday, October 12 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
