La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, improved to 16-6 on the season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Cardinals drop 7-14 on the season.
UWL is now 7-1 at home this season.
UWL scored the first three points in the opening set with kills from
Liz Lansink and
Megan Adams and a service ace from
Isabelle Jensen. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut the deficit to 7-6, but UWL used a 5-0 run to lead 12-6. After the Cardinals made it 12-8, the Eagles scored the next six points for an 18-8 lead. Saint Mary's (Minn.) could get no closer than six points the rest of the set.
The Eagles raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second set as
Anna Rossner recorded three kills. Saint Mary's (Minn.) later cut the lead to 7-4, but three consecutive points gave UWL a 10-4 advantage. The Cardinals could get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Liz Lansink had six kills and four blocks.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) scored the first point in the third set to take its own lead in the match. UWL scored the next six points and later took a 12-5 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead to 18-12, but the Eagles finished the set with a 7-3 run.
Emma Lawrence led UWL with 10 kills while hitting .348 (10-2-23).
Brianne Korducki finished with seven kills with Rossner and Lansink each totaling six. Adams and
Jackie Oetterer each had 12 digs as the Eagles hit .227 (38-16-97). UWL hit .300 (14-5-30) in winning the second set and .353 (15-3-34) in the third.
Sophie Quelle led the Eagles with digs with Lawrence finishing with eight. UWL finished with 12.0 total team blocks.
Ciarra McNally led Saint Mary's (Minn.) with 13 kills while Mandy Schmidt recorded 10 assists. The Cardinals hit -.120 (18-29-92) for the match. McNally finished with a team-high 11 digs.
UWL returns to action Friday, October 15 at 12th-ranked UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
