Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) at ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday night. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, drop to 15-4 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Warhawks, ranked ninth in the AVCA Top-25 Poll, improve to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
UW-Whitewater used a 12-4 run in the opening set to take a 14-6 lead. UWL scored the set's next four points to cut the lead to 14-10 and later cut the margin to 16-15 on an
Emma Lawrence kill. The Eagles tied the set, 18-18, after a
Anna Rossner kill and Warhawks' hitting error. The set was tied, 19-19, but UW-Whitewater scored the final six points to secure the opening set. Jenna Weinfurt had back-to-back kills to win the set.
The Warhawks scored the first four points of the second set and later led, 12-5. UWL cut it to 13-9, but could get no closer the rest of the set. UW-Whitewater scored eight of the final nine points.
UWL took a 9-7 lead in the third set with Lawrence's kill. UW-Whitewater tied it at 9-9, but
Gabrialla Johnson gave UWL a 10-9 lead on a kill. The Warhawks scored the next three points, but the Eagles took four of the next five points for a 14-13 advantage in the set. UW-Whitewater scored the next five points, including four hitting errors from UWL, to take a 18-14 lead. The Eagles later cut the margin to 21-18 on a
Sydney Fedderly kill, but the Warhawks took four of the last five points to win the set.
Lawrence led UWL with 12 kills while Johnson finished with five.
Megan Adams had a team-high 17 assists with
Jackie Oetterer finishing with 16 as the Eagles hit .000 (28-28-105).
Isabelle Jensen finished with 12 digs while
Sophie Quelle totaled 11.
UWL had 3.0 team blocks.
Emma Aske led UW-Whitewater with nine kills. Kellyann Sotiros finished with 16 assists and Paige Manssen 13 with the Warhawks hitting .263 (35-10-95). Morgan Jensen had a match-high 16 digs.
UW-Whitewater finished with 7.0 team blocks.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 9 with a pair of matches in St. Peter, Minnesota. The Eagles face St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 3 p.m. and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 5 p.m.
