Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, wrapped up its regular-season with a 3-0 (30-28, 25-18, 25-19) win over Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon in Berg Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 20-10 overall while the Firebirds drop to 19-11.
It is UWL's second 20-win season under head coach
Amber Dunn. The Eagles went 22-7 in Dunn's first year in 2017.
UWL took a 7-2 lead in the opening set before Carthage (Wis.) came back scoring six straight points. The Firebirds took a 24-20 lead, but the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to lead 25-24 after an
Anna Rossner kill. Carthage (Wis.) later took a 28-27 lead, but UWL scored the final three points to take the opening set.
Gabrialla Johnson's kill tied it at 28-28 and the Firebirds had a pair of hitting errors to end the set.
Carthage (Wis.) led, 6-5, in the second set but UWL went on a 9-0 run to make it 14-6 on back-to-back kills from
Emma Lawrence and
Sydney Fedderly. The Firebirds could get no closer than six points the rest of the set.
UWL trailed, 14-13, in the third set but used a 4-0 run to lead 17-14. After Carthage (Wis.) cut it to 19-17, UWL scored five straight points for a 24-17 lead.
Lawrence finished with 13 kills for UWL while hitting .324 (13-2-34). Rossner totaled nine kills and hit .429 (9-0-21) while Johnson and
Brianne Korducki each had six kills.
Jackie Oetterer had 16 assists and
Megan Adams 12 as the Eagles hit .190 (43-20-121).
Adams led UWL with 17 digs while Fedderly finished with 12 and
Sophie Quelle 10. UWL had 5.0 team blocks.
Haley Horner and Kaitie Rohe led Carthage (Wis.) with nine kills. Jenna Millen recorded 20 assists as the Firebirds hit .087 (28-18-115). Aubree Bucheger had 13 digs and Molly Skoda 12. Carthag (Wis.) finished with 6.0 blocks.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, November 4 at UW-Oshkosh in the first round of the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) at 7 p.m.
