Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, fell 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25) at UW-Stevens Point Friday night in Berg Gym. UWL drops to 19-10 overall and finishes 4-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season. UW-Stevens Point, ranked 24th on the AVCA Poll, improves to 24-6 overall and 4-3 in the WIAC.
UWL is the fifth-seed for the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's) and will travel to fourth-seeded UW-Oshkosh in the first round Tuesday, November 2. UW-Stevens Point is the tournament's third-seed and host sixth-seed UW-Platteville in the first round.
UW-Stevens Point took a 7-2 lead in the opening set Friday night and later led, 19-14. UWL went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 21-20 after back-to-back kills from
Liz Lansink and
Emma Lawrence. The Eagles trailed, 23-22, but the Pointers won the set with kills from Reis Derousseau and Ashley Kopp.
The second set was tied, 5-5, when UW-Stevens Point scored three straight points. UWL trailed, 11-6, but scored six consecutive points for a 12-11 lead. UWL tied the set, 17-17, on a UW-Stevens Point service error, but the Pointers scored the next three points for a 20-17 advantage. Lawrence's kill later cut the deficit to 22-21, but UW-Stevens Point took the last three points for a 2-0 set lead.
Sophie Quelle recorded her 1,000th career dig.
UWL used a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead in the fourth set. Lawrence delivered a kill to give the Eagles a 14-9 lead, but the Pointers scored five of the next seven points to cut it to 16-14 on a kill from Abby Neutz. UW-Stevens Point later trailed, 20-19, but UWL scored the final five points to win the set.
Sydney Fedderly, Lawrence and
Sophie Quelle each had a kill in the run. UWL hit .325 (15-2-40) in the set.
The Eagles took a 14-10 advantage in the fourth set with blocks from
Anna Rossner and Lawrence. The Pointers tied the set, 17-17 and 20-20. After a pair of hitting errors from UW-Stevens Point gave UWL a 22-20 lead, the Pointers rallied off five straight points to win the set and match.
Lawrence led UWL with 22 kills Friday with Lansink finishing with nine and
Brianne Korducki eight.
Megan Adams recorded 35 assists as the Eagles hit .169 (55-27-166). Quelle led four players in double figures in digs with 19. Adams totaled 14 digs, Lawrence 13 and Fedderly 11.
Quelle recorded her 1,000th career dig (1,012) Friday night. She is the 17th player in school history to have 1,000 career digs.
Jenny Randall (2002-05) is the all-time leader with 2,287.
Kopp led UW-Stevens Point with 22 kills while Guresi Mena finished with eight and Derousseau seven. Grace Michalske finished with 45 assists as the Pointers hit .175 (51-23-160). Emma Peterson led UW-Stevens Point with 21 digs with Kopp adding 15 and Katie Albrecht 11.
UWL wraps up its regular season Saturday, October 30 versus Carthage College (Wis.) at noon in Stevens Point.
