UWL Drops Home Opener Against Trine (Ind.)

La Crosse, Wis.-The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's lacrosse team fell in their home opener against Trine University (Ind.) 16-8 Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles drop to 1-4 on the season while the Thunder improve to 1-6.

UWL would start the first half scoring the first three goals of the game, Gabriella Storin would get the first for the Eagles at 28:58 then at 26:42 Valerie Johnson would assist Mackenzie Chvatal for her first of the game. About a minute later Chvatal would get her second of the day. Trine (Ind.) would get on the board at 24:16 after Chloe Vruno found the back of the net, Vruno would score again and then Kristin John would tie the game up 3-3 after her goal at 21:53. 

The Eagles defense would hold the Thunder scoreless for ten minutes until Lilly Dusek shot from the top of the eight with 11:13 to go in the first half for the Thunder's first lead of the game. Chavtal would earn her second hat-trick of the season tying the game at four a piece. UWL would had into halftime trailing Trine (Ind.) 6-5. 

UWL would have 16 shots in the first half with 12 of them on goal. The Eagles went nine-for-nine on clear attempts and picked up 14 ground balls. Ellen Coggio would make six saves in net. 

Trine (Ind.) would get the second half started with back to back goals from Kristen Nguyen a minute apart. At 23:48 a goal from Savannah Allen brought the Eagles within three then a minute later Johnson scored training Trine (Ind.) 9-7. The Thunder would score the next seven goals until the final :10 when Anna Davis assisted Chvatal for her fourth and final goal of the game. 

UWL would have a total 27 shots with 20 on goal, going 13-for-14 on clear attempts while picking up 18 ground balls. The Eagles would win 11 of the 16 draw controls. Chvatal would lead the Eagles with four goals. Johnson would add two while winning a team high six draw controls. Abigail Steigauf picked up three draw controls and two ground balls. Kaylee Keller had a game high five caused turnovers. Coggio would take the loss in net making seven saves. 

Trine (Ind.) had 36 shots with 23 on goal, going 19-for-23 on clears while picking up 21 ground balls. Vruno had five goals for the Thunder, Dusek and John both added four. Nguyen picked up six ground balls adding two goals. Emily Morthorst earned the win in net making 12 saves. 

UWL returns to action Sunday, March, 15 hosting Augustana College (Ill.) at 1 p.m
