UWL Drops Close Game to Augustana (Ill.)

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's lacrosse team dropped a close game at home Sunday afternoon falling to Augustana College (Ill.), 11-9, at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The Eagles drop to 1-5 on the season while the Vikings improve to 2-3. 

Augustana (Ill.) would score first as Sandra Pielechaty assisted Kathryn Hettiger for her first of the game, but UWL's Savannah Allen would answer back as she ran down the field to score, unassisted. A ground ball pickup from KIoee Brabender allowed Allen to assist Anna Davis for a goal to give the Eagles' a 2-1 lead at 18:44 and just :17 later Abigail Steigauf would win the draw and race into the eight to score her first of the day.

Back-to-back goals from the Vikings would tie the game at 3-3 with 16:33 left.  Augustana (Ill.) took the lead at 14:00 after Margaret Cecilio scored on a free position shot. The game would be tied again with 7:56 remaining in the first half after Anna Davis scored to make it 5-5. Augustana's (Ill.) Cassidy Petrie would score to take the lead again, but Valerie Johnson would answer back for UWL to end the first half tied 6-6.  

UWL finished with 16 shots in the first half with nine on goal, picking up seven ground balls and winning five draw controls. Augustana (Ill.) had 12 shots in the first half winning eight draw controls. 

The Eagles would take the lead to start the second half after Steigauf assisted Johnson for her third of the day. Then at 23:50 Gabriella Storin scored a man-up goal to increase UWL's lead, but a goal from Petrie at 20:37 tied the game for the fifth time at 8-8, however the Vikings took the lead back when Sydney Rector found Hettiger open in the eight for another goal. Johnson would score with 5:15 left in the game to tie it at 9-9, but two more goals from Augustana (Ill.) would secure the win for them. 

Ellen Coggio took the loss in net making six saves and getting four ground balls while Courtney Veitch earned the win in net making seven saves picking up three ground balls. 

UWL finished with 28 shots, 16 on goal, going 15-for-20 on clear attempts while picking up 12 ground balls.  The Eagles would win 11 draw controls. Steigauf had seven also adding one goal and one assist. Johnson had a team-high four goals, causing three turnovers and winning two draws. Anna Davis would score twice for UWL. 

Hettiger scored four times for Augustana (Ill.) and Petrie three.  Pielechaty won four draw controls while adding two goals and an assist. The Vikings had 23 shots with 17 on goal, including 10 ground balls and winning 11 draw controls.
