Auburndale, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 6-3 victory over Cornell College (Iowa) Friday morning at Lake Myrtle Park. The Eagles, playing their first game on spring break, improve to 1-3-1 on the season while the Rams drop to 2-7.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Parker Plume doubled with two outs and scored on
Connor Cook's RBI double to make it 1-0.
Alex Schulte followed with a run-scoring single to knock in Cook. Cornell (Iowa) scored three times in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead. All three runs were unearned after a pair of UWL errors.
The Eagles regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Zach Carney reached on an error and stole second. He went to third on
Shane Coker's single. After Coker stole second, Carney and Coker scored on
Brennan Schmitt reached on a Cornell (Iowa) throwing error to give UWL a 4-3 lead. Schmitt later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-3 advantage.
UWL added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth as
Cal Tully scored on a Cornell (Iowa) wild pitch.
Jack Mizgalski (1-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings in relief. He allowed three hits, three unearned runs and one walk while striking out 10. Schulte started, pitching 3.0 innings with four strikeouts. The Eagles finished with seven hits with Plume going 3-for-4 and Coker 2-for-5. Each player scored a run.
Tyler Lederhos (0-1) took the loss for Cornell (Iowa), pitching 1.0 inning in relief while allowing one hit, three unearned run and one walk while striking out two. Kai Inouye started for the Rams, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs with six strikeouts. Cornell (Iowa) totaled three hits.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 14 versus Concordia University Chicago (Ill.) at 8:45 a.m. and Anderson University (Ind.) at 12:15 p.m.
