Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2019 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) loss at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Kolf Sports Center. The Eagles fall to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference while the Titans improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the league.
UW-Oshkosh never trailed in the opening set, leading 4-3. The Titans used a 10-2 run to lead 14-5 after a Shelby Coron kill. UWL could get no closer than seven points the rest of the set. The Eagles scored the first four points of the second set before the Titans went on a 5-0 run. The set was tied, 10-10, when UW-Oshkosh went on a 7-2 run to lead 17-12. The Eagles cut the deficit to 22-17 on a
Brianne Korducki kill, but could get no closer.
UW-Oshkosh scored five of the first seven points in the third set to lead 5-2 on a Samantha Jaeke kill. UWL tied the set, 5-5, before UW-Oshkosh scored the next three points and would never trail again. The Eagles cut the lead to 18-13, but the Titans finished on a 7-5 run to earn the conference win.
Emma Lawrence led UWL with eight kills while
Anna Rossner finished with six.
Abbey Fox recorded 22 assists as the Eagles hit .070 (28-20-115) for the match. Fox and
Sophie Quelle each had 10 digs.
UWL finished with 3.0 team blocks.
Carissa Sundholm led UW-Oshkosh with nine kills while Jaeke finished with eight and Rachel Aasby seven. Emma Kiekhofer had 16 assists and Rebecca Doughty 11 as the Titans hit .211 (38-14-114). Rachel Gardner finished with 18 digs and Sundholm 11.
UW-Oshkosh recorded 3.0 team blocks.
UWL returns to action Friday, September 20 hosting Elmhurst College (Ill.) at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
