UWL Completes Doubleheader Sweep over UW-Stout

Mauston, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon at Woodside Sports Complex. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com Top-25 Polls, won the opener, 6-0, and the nightcap, 16-7. UWL improves to 18-10 overall and 13-3 in the WIAC while UW-Stout drops to 13-14 overall and 8-12 in the conference.

In the opener, Zach Pronschinske (-31) earned the win. He went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 12. Caleb Willems went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout.

UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth with two outs on a Brady Stolzman RBI single and Jake McClellan bases-loaded walk. The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the eighth on Stolzman's single to knock in Brennan Schmitt and Alex Robson's RBI double to score Stolzman.   

Stolzman finished the scoring with a two-run double in the ninth scoring Connor Roesler and Schmitt. 

UWL totaled nine hits in the opener with Stolzman finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI, one walk and one run. Schmitt went 2-for-4 with three runs and a walk. 

Brad Rindfleisch (3-3) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, two run and five walks while striking out four. The Blue Devils had six hits with Alex Jinkins going 2-for-3. 

UWL scored first in the nightcap on Shane Coker's RBI double in the top of the second. The Eagles added six runs in the third, highlighted by McClellan's three-run home run and Cal Tully's two-run double. Carson Youngquist's RBI double made it 4-0 before McClellan's home run. 

Schmitt scored on a UW-Stout error and Zach Carney's RBI double scored Coker to make it 9-0. Coker's run-scoring single in the sixth gave UWL a 10-0 advantage. UW-Stout got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the sixth with Danny Deis having a two-run single. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, including Deis' second two-run single of the game. 

UWL led 12-7 in the top of the eighth after Stolzman's two-run double and the Eagles scored four times in the ninth with Roesler's having a two-run double. 

Jack Mizgalski (2-1) picked up the victory, going 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) and four walks with six strikeouts. UWL finished with 15 hits with Stolzman going 3-for-6 with two RBI. Youngquist, Coker and Carney each had two hits while McClellan and Coker each had three RBI. Tully scored three runs while Nate Heili, Roesler, Schmitt and Carney each had two. 

Cody Urban (2-3) took the loss for UW-Stout, going 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs (six earned) and one walk with one strikeout. The Blue Devils finished with six hits and four errors in the nightcap. Deis went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Kyle Hamilton had two RBI. Jack Hemsath and Joel Thimsen each scored twice.

UWL returns to action Thursday, April 25 with a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
