UWL and UW-Stout Split Pair of One-Run Games

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and UW-Stout split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 2-1, while the Blue Devils came back to take the nightcap, 2-1. UWL is now 17-13 overall and 5-3 in the WIAC while UW-Stout is 15-14 overall and 4-4 in the conference. 

The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener as Mary Iliopoulos led-off with a single, stole second and scored on Kyncaide Diedrich's triple. Diedrich was stranded at third as UWL's Caitlyn Hughes retired the next three batters.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when UWL tied it on back-to-back doubles. Sydne Shattuck led-off with a pinch-hit double and was replaced by pinch runner Emily Lyman. Mia Schmidtke followed with an RBI double to knock in Lyman to tie the game. Schmidtke advanced to third on Sydney Murphy's sacrifice bunt, but was stranded to end the inning.

Caitlyn Hughes earned the win in Saturday's opener.


Sabrina Scardamaglia led-off the bottom of the seventh with a walk for the Eagles and was replaced by pinch-runner Lou Sciortino. Katie Block's sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second with one out. Nicole Trussoni was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. Sciortino and Trussoni both stole a base with Sciortino scoring the winning run on a UW-Stout throwing error.  

Hughes (11-2) earned the win, pitching a complete-game for the Eagles. She went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and one walk with 10 strikeouts. Hughes improved to 38-21 in her career. She ranks fourth in career victories at UWL.

The Eagles totaled four hits in the opener with Trussoni going 2-for-2. 

Sommer Kunstmann (4-7) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out two. The Blue Devils finished with five hits as Diedrich went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

UW-Stout scored twice in the top of the first in the nightcap. Iliopoulos singled to start the game and later scored on Meghan Kelly's two-out RBI double. Alicia Meyer followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0. 

UWL got its run in the bottom of the third as Murphy doubled and replaced by pinch-runner Lyman, who then stole third. Emily Knight's sacrifice fly scored Lyman to cut the lead to 2-1.  The Eagles stranded a runner in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning, but their final eight batters were retired to end the game. 

Maddie Muelken (3-4) took the loss for UWL, pitching a complete-game. She went 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. The Eagles were held to three hits. 

Melea Bruns (5-5) picked up the win for UW-Stout, going 7.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and one walk while striking out one. The Blue Devils were also held to three hits.

UWL returns to action Tuesday, April 23 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 2 p.m. in its regular-season home finale
