Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games at the Tucson Invitational Games on Monday. The Eagles, now 7-7 on the season, fell 7-5 to the University of Texas at Dallas in their first game before earning a 3-2 victory over Hamline University (Minn.).
UT-Dallas scored four times in the top of the first in its win over UWL. The Comets scored three unearned runs in the frame. The Eagles cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the third on
Mia Schmidtke's solo home run.
The Comets took a 6-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but the Eagles tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4.
Stephanie Cole singled followed by a
Kendra Leis double in the sixth. Pinch-hitter
Mallorie Segobiano then delivered both runners with a single to make it 6-3. Segobiano later scored on
Kathryn Vander Schaaf's two-out single to cut it to 6-4.
Ravin Wilson's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave UT-Dallas a 7-4 advantage. UWL scored once in the bottom of the inning with
Sydney Murphy coming in on Leis' two-out single. The Eagles left the tying runs on base to end the game.
UWL had 11 hits in the game with Schmidtke, Cole and Leis each finishing with two.
Sydne Shattuck (2-3) took the loss, pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing four hits, four runs (one earned) and one walk.
Maddie Muelken pitched 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs with two strikeouts.
UT-Dallas had 13 hits with Emily Schroeder finishing 4-for-4. Wilsen went 2-for-4. Nicole Vasicek (4-3) picked up the victory, going 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and one walk with one strikeout.
Versus Hamline (Minn.), the Pipers scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. UWL scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth.
Katie Block reached on an error to start the inning and advanced to second on Cole's single. After a groundout, Segobiano hit a three-run home run to give the Eagles the 3-2 lead.
Hamline (Minn.) had its last seven batters retired to end the game.
Caitlyn Hughes (5-1) earned the complete-game victory, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk with four strikeouts. The Eagles had seven hits with Cole and
Sabrina Scardamaglia each had two hits.
Five different players had a hit for Hamline (Minn.). Alex Molloy (4-2) took the loss for the Pipers, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, March 19 versus MacMurray College (Ill.) at 11 a.m. (Central) and Edgewood College (Wis.) at 1 p.m. (Central).
