Rosemont, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to four with a doubleheader sweep of Loras College (Iowa) Sunday at The Dome at the Ballpark. The Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season after their 14-1 win in the opener in five innings and a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. Loras (Iowa) drops to 2-4 on the season.
UWL scored four times in the top of the second in the opener as
Katie Block,
Emily Knight and
Mia Schmidtke each recorded RBI singles. The Eagles tallied 10 runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth as six players recorded an RBI. UWL sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning.
Kendra Leis and Knight each had two-run doubles in the inning while
Sabrina Scardamaglia had a pair of RBI singles.
Caitlyn Hughes earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and one walk while striking out four. The Eagles totaled 12 hits as Leis, Block, Scardamaglia and Knight each had two. Knight finished with three RBI while Leis, Block, Scardamaglia and
Mallorie Segobiano each had two.
Loras (Iowa) took a 2-0 lead in the top of hte second in the nightcap before UWL tied it in the bottom of the inning on Block's RBI double and
Kathryn Vander Schaaf's RBI single.
The Duhawks regained the lead in the top of third, but the Eagles scored four times to take a 6-3 advantage.
Sydney Murphy scored the tying run on a Leis' triple, who later scored on a Scardamaglia fielder's choice to give UWL a 4-3 lead. Knight later hit a two-run double knocking in Scardamaglia and Block to make it 6-3.
Sydne Shattuck earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and one walk while striking out one.
Maddie Muelken
picked up the save, going 3.0 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. The Eagles finished with 10 hits in the nightcap with Murphy, Block and Vander Schaaf each having two. Knight had two RBI.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 16 opening its spring trip with two games in Tucson, Arizona. The Eagles face Millikin University (Ill.) at 1 p.m. (Central) and Buena Vista University (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m. (Central).
