La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team, ranked 17th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, extended its winning streak to five with a 60-47 victory over Lake Forest College (Ill.) in the UWL Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season while the Foresters drop to 2-4.
UWL, 4-0 at home this season, improve to 9-1 over the last five seasons in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.
Lake Forest (Ill.) led by as many as four in the first quarter and took a 13-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes. The Foresters took a 16-15 lead on Meona Feather's three-point basket with 8:13 left in the second quarter, but the Eagles used a 14-3 run to take a 29-19 lead with :43 remaining in the half. UWL led, 29-20, at halftime.
Kyah Steiner had a game-high 15 rebounds.
The teams combined for 33 turnovers in the first half while shooting 25.4% (15-of-59) from the field.
UWL led, 32-22, with 8:00 left in the third quarter on a
Lexie Higgins layup. Lake Forest (Ill.) went on a 9-1 run to cut the deficit to 33-31 with 4:18 remaining on a pair of Kelsey Burton free throws. The Eagles took a 46-38 lead after three quarters. Two free throws from Katie Fagan for Lake Forest (Ill.) cut the lead to 48-40 with 9:01 left in the game when UWL scored 10 of the next 13 points to lead 58-43 on
Carly Coulthart's three-pointer with 5:10 remaining. The Foresters could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
UWL shot 32.2% from the field, including 37.5% (nine-of-24) from three-point range, and 65.0% (13-of-20) at the line.
Delaney Schoenenberger led the Eagles with 15 points while also having six rebounds.
Dani Craig and
Ava Kramer each finished with seven points. Kramer had a game-high five steals.
Kyah Steiner finished with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Lake Forest (Ill.) shot 27.1% from the field, including 18.5% (five-of-27) from three-point range, and 83.3% (10-of-12) at the line. Zaria Sydnor led the Foresters with 11 points while Fagan recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, December 11 hosting Viterbo University (Wis.) at 5 p.m.
