Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 95-75 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin Friday night in the Loras College (Iowa) Tip-Off Classic. The Falcons were playing their season-opener.
Concordia Wisconsin now leads the all-time series, 3-2, with UWL. The teams were meeting for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
UWL never trailed in Friday's game, racing out to a 9-2 lead on 3 three-pointers from Zac Haese. The Eagles took a 15-4 lead on Luke Norcia's three-pointer with 16:02 remaining. The Falcons cut the lead to 15-7 on Jordan Johnson's three-pointer with 15:32 remaining, but Concordia Wisconsin would get no closer the rest of the game.
Johnson's jumper with 10:43 left in the first half cut the lead to 23-14, but UWL used a 9-1 run to lead 32-15 with 8:42 remaining on a Seth Anderson layup. The Eagles took their largest lead of the first half at 52-29 with :58 remaining on Ethan Anderson's layup.
UWL led, 52-31, at halftime as it shot 54.5% from the field, including 57.1% (eight-of-14) from three-point range. Ethan Anderson scored 14 points in the first half, going four-of-eight from the field, including two-of-three from three-point range, and hitting all four of his free throw attempts. Eight different players scored in the first half for UWL.
Concordia Wisconsin could get no closer than 17 points in the second half as UWL led by as many as 29.
UWL shot 57.1% from the field, including 62.5% (15-of-24) from three-point range, and 72.7% (16-of-22) at the line. The Eagles shot 60.9% (14-of-23) from the field in the second half, including 70.0% (seven-of-10) from three-point range.
The Eagles' 15 three-pointers are tied for fifth in single-game school history. UWL had a school record 20 three-point field goals in a 95-50 victory over MacMurray College (Ill.) on November 26, 2016.
UWL's 95 points on Friday night are the most under third-year head coach Kent Dernbach. It's also the most points since the 95-50 win over MacMurray (Ill.).
Ethan Anderson five players in double figures with 25 points, going eight-of-13 from the field, including five-of-six from three-point range, and four-of-four at the line. He also had a team-high six rebounds. Seth Anderson scored 13 points, finishing six-of-nine from the field and one-of-four at the line. Haese, Norcia and Zion Turner each finished with 12 points. Norcia finished with a team-high seven assists. Terek Nesheim had nine points and five assists.
Concordia Wisconsin shot 45.3% from the field, including 20.0% (two-of-10) from three-point range, and 73.5% (25-of-34) at the line. Johnson had a team-high 22 points for the Falcons with Joey Zietlow finishing with 12. Johnson had a team-high six rebounds while Zietlow and Brandon Keller each had five.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 16 facing Blackburn College (Ill.) at 2 p.m. in the Loras College (Iowa) Tip-Off Classic.
