La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a 2-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 7-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC while the Titans fall to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Kaitlyn Villars found the back of the net off a pass from
Sophie Amundson to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 33:33. It was Villars' seventh goal of the season and Amundson's fourth assist. UWL took a 2-0 lead at 39:00 on an own goal.
Lauren Yass had four shots in Saturday's game.
The Eagles led 2-0 at halftime, outshooting the Titans, 9-1 in the first half.
UWL totaled 14 shots overall with five on goal while UW-Oshkosh finished with four shots, none on goal.
Lauren Yass led UWL with four shots (one on goal) while Villars finished with three shots (one on goal).
Hayley Hargroder added two shots (one on goal). Four different UW-Oshkosh players, Grace Herrmann, Emily Burg, Madison Smith and Mallory Knight, recorded a shot.
Quinn Shannon earned the shutout victory for UWL. It is Shannon's fourth shutout of the season. Madelyn Runyan had three saves for UW-Oshkosh.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 9 hosting Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
