Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-1 (25-11, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18) win over Illinois Wesleyan University Friday afternoon at the UW-Whitewater Classic. The Eagles improve to 9-10 on the season while the Titans drop to 3-14.
UWL never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a 9-3 lead. Illinois Wesleyan cut the deficit to 10-5, but UWL went on a 11-5 run to lead 21-10. The Eagles scored the final four points to earn the win.
Liz Lansink had 10 kills.
Illinois Wesleyan never trailed in the second set, leading 7-3 after a UWL service error. The Eagles cut the deficit to 9-7 on a
Liz Lansink kill before the Titans scored four straight points for a 13-7 lead. UWL made it 13-11 with a 4-0 run, but Illinois Wesleyan responded with a 5-0 run.
The third set was tied, 4-4, when UWL scored three straight points for a 7-4 lead. Illinois Wesleyan cut the lead to 15-14, but UWL went on a 6-0 run to lead 21-14 after a
Anna Rossner kill. The Eagles scored four of the final five points of the set.
Illinois Wesleyan led 10-7 in the fourth set when UWL used a 11-2 run to lead 18-12 on a Titans' hitting error. Illinois Wesleyan could get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Rossner led UWL with 13 kills while hitting .464 (13-0-28). Lansink had 10 kills and .364 (10-2-22).
Emma Lawrence and Meghan Paider each had seven kills.
Abbey Fox recorded 36 assists as the Eagles hit .222 (51-16-158).
Sophie Quelle led UWL with 17 digs with Fox finishing with 16. Lawrence added 12 digs and
Isabelle Jensen 10. The Eagles had 11.0 team blocks. Rossner had seven block assists and Lawrence five.
Jessica McCall led Illinois Wesleyan with 12 kills. Madi Corey had 29 assists as the Titans hit .078 (39-27-153). Amber Juarez had 25 digs as the Titans totaled 9.0 team blocks.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 12 with a pair of matches in the UW-Whitewater Classic. The Eagles face Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 10 a.m. and Millikin University (Ill.) at 3 p.m.
