Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 60-49 win at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon in Kachel Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks drop to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
It is UWL's second straight win at UW-Whitewater after a 66-62 victory last season. It marks the first time since 1988-89 (73-70) and 1989-90 (73-67) that UWL earned back-to-back victories at UW-Whitewater.
The 49 points by UW-Whitewater is its lowest against UWL since the Eagles' 61-49 win in 2002-03.
UWL led 10-6 with 3:23 left in the first quarter after a
Lexie Higgins' jumper, but UW-Whitewater scored five straight points to lead 11-10 with 1:29 remaining.
Dani Craig's three-pointer gave the Eagles a 13-11 advantage with 1:00 left in the first half. UWL would not trail the rest of the game. Craig's jumper with :23 remaining and
Whittni Rezin's three-point field with :11 left gave UWL a 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
The Eagles outscored the Warhawks, 9-2 in the second quarter to take a 27-15 halftime lead. UW-Whitewater finished one-of-15 (6.7%) from the field in the quarter.
UWL led, 27-17, when UW-Whitewater went on a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to 30-29 with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter. Olivia Freckman's free throw later cut the lead to 36-35 with 1:07 left when UWL's
Emma Gamoke's hit a three-pointer for a four-point lead. The Eagles led, 41-37 after three quarters on
Delaney Schoenenberger's jumper with :10 remaining.
Freckman's two free throws with 3:02 remaining cut UWL's lead to 51-48, but Higgins' jumper and a three-pointer by
Carly Coulthart at the end of the shot clock gave the Eagels a 56-48 advantage with 1:37 left. UWL went on a 9-1 run to end the game.
UWL shot 36.8% from the field, including 38.9% (seven-of-18) from three-point range, and 64.7% (11-of-17) at the free throw line. Craig led the Eagles with 18 points while
Ava Kramer finished with 11 points, six rebounds and game-high six assists and three steals. Gamoke finished with nine points and six rebounds.
UW-Whitewater shot 38.2% form the field, including 18.8% (three-of-16) from three-point range, and 50.0% (four-of-eight) at the line. Freckmann led the Warhawks with 11 points and game-high 17 rebounds. Sarah Schumacher finished with 10 points.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 16 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
