Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team went 2-1 at the two-day Augsburg University (Minn.) Invitational Friday-Saturday. The Eagles opened play with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 28-26, 15-13) win over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) Friday before splitting a pair of matches Saturday. UWL defeated Cornell College (Iowa) 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-13) while losing to host Augsburg (Minn.) 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12).
UWL, St. Thomas (Minn.) and Cornell (Iowa) were all receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll.
UWL is now 6-2 on the season.
In the win over St. Thomas (Minn.),
Julia Van Fleet set a school record with 43 digs. She broke the school record of 41 digs set by
Kris Kozlovsky versus UW-Platteville on November 7, 1997 and
Jenny Randall against UW-Stout on November 13, 2004.
Van Fleet led four players in double figures in digs with
Marisa Johnson finishing with 29,
Sophie Quelle with 20 and
Abbey Fox with 18. Fox led UWL with 46 assists against St. Thomas (Minn.).Â
Emma Lawrence finished with a team-high 15 kills while
Rhiana Pochman finished with 13,
Kathryn Maas with 12 and
Marisa Johnson with 11.Â
Julia Van Fleet
UWL hit .104 (56-34-211) for the match. The Eagles had 10.0 team blocks.
Versus Cornell (Iowa), Johnson recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. She hit .406 (13-0-32) for the invitational. Maas finished with 11 kills against the Rams while Fox had 30 assists and 13 digs. UWL hit .225 (39-12-120).
Fox and Pochman led the Eagles with 10 kills versus Augsburg (Minn.) while Fox added 39 assists and 15 digs for a triple-double. Fox hit .471 (10-2-71).
Courtney Conway had a team-high 24 digs against Augsburg (Minn.) while Van Fleet finished with 19 and Johnson with 15.
Van Fleet was one of seven players named to the all-tournament team. She recorded 71 digs in three matches, 5.92 per set.
UWL returns to action Thursday, September 13 hosting city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) at 7 p.m. in its home opener in Mitchell Hall.
