Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a 5-0 victory at UW-Oshkosh Saturday at J.J. Keller Field. The Eagles improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC while the Titans fall to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Five different players scored for UWL as it extended its winning streak to five straight overall. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 2:33 with
Cassie Handrick scoring her fifth goal of the season, assisted by
Margaret Harings. UWL made it 2-0 at 13:59 with Harings getting her fourth goal of the year with
Kaitlyn Villars recording the assist.
The Eagles led 2-0 at halftime, outshooting the Titans, 13-1 in the first half.
Natalie Herzog gave UWL a 3-0 lead at 63:14 assisted by
Natalie Jamison. It was Herzog's second goal of the year.
Maya Schmitt made it 4-0 at 64:29 with her second goal of the season, assisted by Handrick.
Hannah Beech finished the scoring at 85:03 getting her second goal of the year.
Hannah Anderson recorded the assist.
UWL, receiving votes on this week's United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, finished with 20 shots, including 11 on goal. UW-Oshkosh finished with seven shots with three on goal.
Lily Brock earned the shutout for UWL, recording three saves. Erin Toomey had six saves for UW-Oshkosh.
UWL returns to action Sunday, September 30 at Concordia University Wisconsin at 2 p.m.
